Our clients come to us dissatisfied with what is. They have tastes and convictions, budgets and constraints. They live in neighborhoods as well as houses. They envision a more workable life. We have the skill to transform challenging spaces into living solutions. We’re practical, realistic, honest. We ask a million questions: How do you want to live? What do you need? Working together, we free up possibility. We capture your dream and give it dimension. The process is often as beautiful as the result.
Why "Umami"? Umami is a Japanese term, which describes the fifth taste (the other 4 being salty, sweet, bitter, and sour). Umami refers to the subtle, rich flavor that adds depth and complexity to foods, making all of the other flavors meld together and sing. Similarly, at Umami Interiors, we strive to subtly bring all of the elements of your space together with finishing touches like window coverings and pillows. The perfect draperies can bring your whole room together and make it feel complete.

My foray into architecture started in high school when I decided to expand my family's Santa Barbara home into its large unfinished attic. My parents and neighbors were a little alarmed when they came home from work and saw that I had cut a large hole in the side of the house for a new door and stairway. For the next four summers I worked for contractors and electricians so that I could learn the skills needed to finish the attic into livable space. At UC Berkeley, I studied architecture and civil engineering. After college, I worked in construction and was licensed as a general contractor. For the past 20 years, I have been working as an architect on new vacation homes throughout Northern California and remodels/renovations in the San Francisco Bay Area. My goal as an architect is to help you make the architecture and construction process a conscious effort and to create a beautiful and functional environment, unique to your personality and reflective of your specific needs. Life is but a dream. With a slant towards Hindu philosophy, my mother would argue that life is pre-determined and that ultimately we have no control over our lives. I would argue that we have the choice to create beautiful environments, and I meticulously work through the details to ensure that your dream becomes a reality. My design etiquette is restrained and comfortable, not gaudy. I love light and large windows, natural materials, and expression of the structure. I gravitate to work that is made by craftsmen rather than machine, to elements and details from the 1920s and before. Thank you for your consideration in having me help with your project. Rob Kelly

Creating a beautiful home supports us in creating a beautiful life. My vision is to take your vision, who you are, what you love, and who you are becoming, and channel that into an environment that is welcoming, inspiring, and restorative. I seek clients who share my quest for what is real, true, and genuine. I am elated to share the magic my team has created — just for you. My purpose is fulfilled when I see the positive impact our work makes in our clients’ lives. In younger years I traveled to France and Italy, where I steeped myself in the worlds of art, food, and wine. I fell in love with the ways that design and culture intersect; how we weave the threads of our personal lives and our culture into a rich tapestry that makes up our environment. My first career was in restaurant management; during that time my appreciation for the connection between setting, food, and community deepened. These powerful experiences formed the foundation of my core values as an interior designer: creating welcoming havens of beauty, comfort and grace that call us to perform the rituals of home and community — connecting with others, cooking together, dining together, playing, and relaxing. I am wild about transformation. My greatest joy is when I create an environment that is even better than what the client had imagined for themselves. I design in every style: Modern, Contemporary, Traditional, Spanish, Mediterranean, Craftsman, and more. I bring a warm, classic, and timeless approach to the aesthetic style that matches your heart, your community, and your space. I started LMB Interiors in 2002 when I was pregnant with my first child. The one-woman firm that began in my dining room has grown to include a team of talented, dynamic, soulful designers who share my values of authenticity, warmth, and a livable approach to interior design; now located in an elegant urban-chic office in the historic White Building in downtown Oakland. As a group, we complement one another’s contributions to the whole with a deep appreciation for our individuality, while inspiring each other to thrive in a culture of collaboration and graciousness. We conceive beautiful environments where love, family, and community flourish.
