Aralia: Innovation in Landscape DesignAralia: Innovation in Landscape Design
Taking inspiration from his Industrial Design & Technology degree studies and a real passion for 19th and early 20th century industrial architecture on brownfield sites, Tristen brought Brownfield Beauty to life. Perceived as a centrepiece of a large external courtyard of a redeveloped industrial building converted into luxury apartments, Brownfield Beauty is a place for residents to meet, socialise and relax. In Tristen’s design the industrial and rustic – four large Venetian blind style screens, reclaimed brick seats and tumble down brick walls – contrast dramatically with a relaxed planting theme and mock ‘rill’ feature emitting relaxing running water sounds. The screens, along with large ornamental trees, provide a sense of safety and seclusion too for residents. A relaxed planting theme consists of grasses and ferns to create bold statements and structure throughout the year and the colour palette is mainly pastel and muted shades to harmonise with the tones of the garden’s industrial materials, with some dashes of colour to draw the eye with plants such as Digitalis, Echinacea and Kniphofia. As a communal area, a key feature is that planting is architectural and features structural evergreen plants ensuring areas of interest all year.

The scree garden, under the shade of tall pine trees, but catching sun in the summer months. Carpets of foliage, with different colours and textures creating a tapestry that last through the seasons, before being submerged under metres of snow in the harsh winter.

Our client’s garden was bereft of any interest, other than a large shed at the end of the garden, and a small patio outside the house. An unattractive stand of conifers dominated one side of the garden, and overpowered the space. These two areas were linked using a bold design of interlinking circles, with a cobbled path snaking its’ way down the garden to create a feeling of greater width and depth. A dry stone wall sets off the patio, and frames the entrance into the main part of the garden. A feature pot is set on a plinth at the bottom end of the garden, where it is visible from the house. The planting is colourful and interesting, with box balls used to reinforce the circular theme. The conifers have been removed and replaced with attractive ornamental trees that will provide more year round interest

In this traditional garden we wanted to give the space a revamp while still ensuring it was in keeping with it’s classic, rural surroundings. You are welcomed into the garden through a charming pergola wrapped in vining plants. Square stepping stones create a winding path across the gently curving lawn, this is surrounded by elegant flower beds. The sweeping flower beds mimic the shape of the rounded walls and the smooth lines draw your eyes around the garden. The raised sleeper bed is home to bountiful selection of greenery and adds both texture and rustic charm. As this area is sheltered it was planted with variety of ferns and heucheras which thrive in shaded areas. In the large flower bed a stunning rose garden was planted with a selection of handpicked, hybrid tea roses. A bird bath and feeder not only creates a focal point, but also encourages wildlife into the garden. The raised flower beds and steps lead down to a stone patio. This sits beneath a traditional veranda so the garden can be enjoyed in all weather. A picturesque chimenea allows the patio becomes and extension of the home as it can be enjoyed late into the summer evenings. The garden is surrounded by a beautiful stone wall which adds privacy. Climbing ivy creates a charming backdrop for the blooming flowers to standout against. The result is a traditional, but quaint garden.

Located at the back of this significantly sloped garden the clients wanted to make this space a place to entertain. After Karl’s initial site survey, it was clear the materials here needed to be natural, simple and dog friendly. Karl put together a concept design and material sample pallet. The clients loved the colour and texture of the Vanda Moortel pavers. Karl recommended these because they’re handmade and have a fantastic natural finish. These would be finished with a 6mm border of galvanized steel; we coated this to match the metal window and door frames of the house. We paired the pavers with a bespoke 150x150mm Oak pergola. We chose to leave this untreated so it would naturally silver/ grey over time. Timber in this situation will normally take approximately a year to go grey. Timber weathering varies depending on location and exposure. If in a hurry, we can treat timber so it already looks aged when installed.
