Small Irish kitchen needs a facelift

Hello......and help!!!

I have a small Irish kitchen that is outdated with old panelled wooden cupboards, linoleum flooring that needs replacing and a wall behind the range (think American woodstove with oven) that has missing tiles and bare concrete showing. I'm on a very limited budget, could get new tiles to replace existing ones, and paint, but structurally, the kitchen will remain the same. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would paint the cupboards using either annie Sloan or little greene paint. Annie sloan paint means no prep work so is quick and easy. LG is expensive but fantastic quality. Personally I would go for grey to update the kitchen. If you can I would remove the architrave/beading at the bottom of the cupboards.I would re-tile with metro tiles which you can get for £15-20 sqm. These shouldn't date and should tie in with whatever you choose when you can get the kitchen re-fitted. If you can remove the remainder of the tiles yourself it will be cheaper than having the tiler to do it. I would redo the floor with vinyl. This is easy to pick up at £10-15 sqm and presumably your floor is hard boarded already as you have Lino so this should be a cheap fix. I would also remove the hanging utensil rail and put up some vintage or industriał artwork to make it more modern. I would just paint the walls white to keep it fresh and easy to maintain as kitchens get dirty.

Add extra cheap tiles behind range and then paint them all like they do in Cafe Rouge so they all Match. Take the wavy thing off as its a bit naff. Paint cabinets a cheerful colour and crackle glaze with a more subtle top colour. Add dark walnut knob handles ( to tie in with range ) Will look retro but stylish x

Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. I contemplated going with a different lighter sofa colour but practicality won in the end!

I would go with what the architect suggested. That was my immediate thought and also means that you will get light into your living area all day since the kitchen would be at the front and the living room at the back. It will be a nicer space to live in. If you really can't face bedrooms at the front though could you do something like this? It clearly isn't to scale!! You probably sacrifice a bit of space in that smallest bedroom but gain much more liveable floor space at the front of the house. It also gives your husband the open pan area he likes. It does sacrifice a separate entrance way though. I'd also shift the bathroom wall out and steal some space from the utility room so that you have a larger bathroom.

Never been to Ireland but when I think of Irish pubs, I think of rich mahoganies and deep jeweltones. Something welcoming and friendly with a bit of blarney; steeped in tradition with a sense of humor. My quick net search has turned up exteriors of mostly primary hues but a lot is going to depend on what type of clientele the owner wants to attract. I'm not sure that color is going to be your biggest hurdle. I think style is and once you determine that, then choosing the color will follow fairly easily.

Oh, might have to put a wipeable picture or something behind the rage as that box bit on the wall looks like an access point . So don't tile that bit in! X
