Pop of Colour

Any suggestions on giving my living room a pop of colour? I'm unhappy with the rug but unsure what colour I should introduce. Any advice to bring the whole room together grateful appreciated!

The rug is a perfect place to start introducing some color and pattern. Do you like blue? I do, so I feel like a light or dark blue rug could work really well. Also, throw pillows are a great way to add more colors and patterns because they're affordable and easily replaced. Check out some living rooms here for more inspiration--I looked up just a generic "living room with colorful rug," but you could certainly refine it with specific colors: http://www.houzz.com/living-room-with-colorful-rug-

I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. It is also fine that the pictures are off-centre to the wall as long as they are centered to the bed. :)

White-out or pops of colour?

I think a few options. You can either layer whites or choose a neutral in different shades of the same colour or a few coordinating neutrals then use throughout the house, sometimes on all the walls, some for a feature wall etc. then you can either add the same pop of colour throughout or choose a few that coordinate. If you have an open plan room, maybe one end go for a wall in x colour and the other have a chair in a coordinating colour and tie it together with a cushion in x colour. I'd keep woodwork the same colour. Colour can just be in the accessories or furniture rather than on the wall too. It is your home so the interior should reflect you, if you do go predominantly white with a few colour feature walls they can be easily be painted when sold. This may be a little extreme but you could also pick just 3 colours. I love navy, white and hot pink at the moment and you can give rooms different looks. I suggest creating 2 areas in this room, one conversational at the fireplace and the other for TV viewing. Move the TV to either the wall by the curved sofa or the corner where the end table is located in the image. Something larger on the mantel about the size of the firebox opening such as the mirror over the curved sofa. The mirror over the sofa should be lowered to about 6"-8" over the couch if you leave it as is.

Select different toss pillows that are textured. Find a shag carpet that is larger and carries multiple beige and brown tones. Consider replacing the coffee and end tables with glass ones or fabric covered stripes.

There is nothing wrong with monochromatic you just need to add the texture to make it work. If you are craving color think one color, such as midtone blue, green or red. Use it sparingly and replace any small decor with much larger items.

May I suggest trying your mirror decoration on the wall behind the brown chairs so it is presented as an interesting and elegant accent that engages with the chairs and lamp rather than a focal point on your long horizontal wall.
Being an art consultant, I would suggest bringing in some color with a painting over the grey couch. Since your large windows suggest a love for the outdoors and big vistas think about keeping that view 24 hours a day with an atmospheric landscape on your wall. Oil or Acrylic paintings are your best choice for all the sunlight that comes in through those windows. Best wishes. rcs
