Where do i go from here? Needs a pop of colour but what colour?

I also need advice re: Curtains: What colour curtains would you use? i have a brushed gold mirror over the fireplace. I'm also planning on installing a new glass chandelier. Any ideas regarding pop of colour?

The fireplace is a strong "black box" on the wall. I would love to see it balanced out with an accent rug or strong coffee table. A pop of colour could be your gold brushed mirror. I would see if the little metal railings on the hearth could be switched out to the brushed gold. Smoked-glass coffee table would help...but I think the gold is going in the wrong direction. Your room is "Argentina" flag colouring which would do well with silver accents and maybe a hint of chatreuse (Granny Smith Apple green to the rest of us) just to keep you on your toes. A glossy white table would also suit...but the black fireplace is giving me some problems.

There are a few things you can do with paint to balance out the fireplace; the thinnest of black outlines painted on each stripe in the wallpaper would make a very strong feature. For added drama, include the moldings. I also think the lower white could be a warmer one, to pick up the background of the wallpaper.
Silk, or faux silk drapes would look very well with your brocade, and deeper shades of the colours you already have - silver, blue, cream, black and a touch of gold/ bronze - can be added to cushions and drapery, hardware and metal legs on occasional tables for added interest. I think your chandelier could look well with those changes made, but would like to know what you dislike about it, or hope for in changing it out. Are you headed for a different overall style, or looking to refresh?

Thank you for your suggestions and ideas! I love some of the more daring/colourful ideas, but I don't think I'm, personally, bold enough to go with such a contemporary look. I'm going to stick to a traditional/modern style and use large (4" x 8") white subway tiles and dark grey grout. I'm thinking of using a dark grey paint around the kitchen walls and then a lighter shade around the rest of the room, with maybe the dark grey on the wall behind the TV too. Will be a few more weeks before that's all done, but I'll post a picture when I eventually get there. Thanks again!

Window shopping and lots of online browsing.! .haven't purchased anything yet!. Just getting house back in order after painting! I have put back the red/winey curtains that I previously had up...convinces me more to go with a neutral colour. The walls are rich Taupe but with a slight grey hue off them so I think the bottom left above actually might work. I have bedding very similar so I took them out and held up and think it would look very nice. Purple isn't a theme in my house (although I do have one bedroom painted purple/lilac) My sitting room is white red black and silver and living/kitchen room is tan and red. I want a rug that wont show up the dirt that much...I live in the country side and have lots of dirty feet coming in so I cant go for any rug that is too light in colour

I think you should consider houssaon's idea of painting it the same color as the walls. Is the top of the tv console painted wood or is it a stone or composite? In the pictures my ipad shows me speckles (not dirt!!). My ipad sometimes *lies* to me. :) If the gray is the prominent color in the paint, maybe a darker gray would be a good choice too. If you are happy with the gray/green color next to your bookcases, then you should be able to pick a gray that would look good with both the new paint, and the bookcase. Gray next to the fireplace shouldn't be a problem :)

Ooh Darzy I like your thinking. Actually the curtains are taupe and a nearly mint green - not stripes more they blend into each other (see pic). But if I got some art picking out those 2 colours that could work. I love teal but not sure about it on this wall. Maybe coral could be nice or is that too on trend? I also have an old chair I need to get reupholstered and was struggling for ideas for that. But a floral pattern with the green and taupe from the curtains and a third colour that matches the art could work well - ideas, ideas, ideas!Thank you Houzzers I knew you'd help me to look at this differently.

I feel like the wall below the chair rail should be gray instead of white. The trim needs to pop, not all blend together.

I agree a warmer white below the chair rail would work. Also a white Flokati rug would ground the sofa well and add the right amount of texture. sometimes adding texture works more effectively than adding an accent color.

Like the advice you have been given about re-painting the lower part of your walls a cream (same as the cream stripe in the top part), but I also think you might want to change your pillow covers to something more sparkling...the present ones aren't going well with the sofa in my opinion.

I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

Thanks everyone for your comments/suggestions, all very helpful. I have attached a slightly updated photo. The black fireplace is an issue for me also, ideally i wanted to remove it and replace with a cream marble fireplace but it wasn't possible due to budget restrictions. Thanks again.

you can by pre made fire place mantels, or surrounds if you will. to go around and beef up the fire place, and also give it some white to offset the black box you have there now.
