Same practical question Steven,

Where did you find the fixings for the ladder connection to rail and the rail itself ?

I love these tall bookcases and the ladder is beautiful as well as practical.

Hi there, the bookcase was built by the principal contractor and design by the interior designer, Rebecca Leivars, who also has a profile on this website.

What is the light colored flooring that goes w all this gray? I love these gray bookcases!

Window shopping and lots of online browsing.! .haven't purchased anything yet!. Just getting house back in order after painting! I have put back the red/winey curtains that I previously had up...convinces me more to go with a neutral colour. The walls are rich Taupe but with a slight grey hue off them so I think the bottom left above actually might work. I have bedding very similar so I took them out and held up and think it would look very nice. Purple isn't a theme in my house (although I do have one bedroom painted purple/lilac) My sitting room is white red black and silver and living/kitchen room is tan and red. I want a rug that wont show up the dirt that much...I live in the country side and have lots of dirty feet coming in so I cant go for any rug that is too light in colour

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... You can leave the handrail the same distance from the wall as it is now. Leave it connected to the newel post at the top; remove the newel post at the bottom, and add what's called a 'return' to anchor the bottom end to the wall. Then add a couple of brackets going up the stairs. The challenge is that the return should match the profile of the handrail, in order to blend, but check at the home center or a lumber yard/mill to see if you can match it (take measurements/drawings/close-up photos, etc.). As for painting the stairs--be careful with "fun" graphics. The treads and risers need to be clearly defined and regular. For example, a plaid or check that doesn't match the tread and riser exactly at each step is a trip hazard and may not meet building codes. People need to be able to see the treads clearly even without paying attention to them. Walking is an unconscious activity and we need to make it as easy as possible. Confusing patterns are a menace. In NYC, they put new edges on treads on one stairway at one train station that were designed to make them less slippery. However, they also made it more difficult to discern the edge of the tread. In 6 weeks, more than 1,400 people fell down those stairs. Then they redid them. Over 90% of injuries on stairs happen during descent. I highly recommend Bill Bryson's great book 'At Home--A Short History of Private Life'. The NYC anecdote above came from Chapter 14--'The Stairs'. Fascinating and amusing book. My house is 100 years old, so I feel your pain dealing with the changes and additions that happened over time.
