Living room furniture placement - HELP!!

Hi everyone

I’m currently in the middle of a 9 month renovation but this room has me stumped.

This is our second living room. It will be used as a kids tv room, music room but also a cosy living room in the winter.

The curtains and shelving units are gone and the black tiles around the fireplace will be replaced. Now I need to work out how I’m going to lay the room out. There are NO alcoves in this room.

I want to put our piano against the wall to the right of the fireplace and have a picture light and art work underneath.
To the left, I’m thinking wall mounted tv within a shelving unit but not too deep (maybe 300-400mm) instead of the 600mm we used to have here which really ate into the room.

My concern is will the lack of symmetry either side of the fireplace annoy me? one side would have shelving and a cupboard and the other side would have the piano.
Would it look strange to have a shelving unit sticking out on just one side?

Would it annoy you, I don't know. Do you love symmetry? Are there other options for piano placement anywhere else? I think that wall is going to be very busy, possibly too busy. Could we please have a floorplan and some idea of what else furniture wise you are planning to include?

Latest update! Made a few changes to the book cabinet to the left of the fireplace. Added chrome legs to match the legs on the tv cabinet and added doors to the top half to try to make it look less cluttered. The lighting in the photos isn't great but hopefully you get the idea.Am quite pleased with the result. Am still trying to decide on art for over the fireplace, keep changing my mind but considering getting this canvas (see picture).

I think you should consider installing wood or laminate flooring for a more on trend look. Do this first so that you have a nice frame to place your furnishing. Keep the walls painted as they are for now while you figure out what you want to do furniture wise for the room I think you should consider where the TV will be placed so that you can have good viewing and then have the sofa placed opposite the TV. This way you can enjoy the room if tv is going to be placed here. After that the other pieces will fall into place for you. You might also consider making the mantel deeper to display the radio antique?It could be a nice focal point in the room and on the fireplace. Also I like the current color of your room....it will work while you are figuring out what goes where. Paint LAST when you have your color design established in your upholstery. No need to have 100 dollars worth of paint dictating what the sofa color will be. If you do not have funds now, then place things you have now and take your time deciding what you are going to do first. But as your walls look fine and you are not sure about furnishings then do the floor and wait for the rest as funds become available.

hey everyone, So i'm sooo undecided on how to bring our living room together. We painted the chimney breast choc brown and the fire place cream which I like the look of. We have and a brown and flecked cream carpet and duck egg/ brown/ cream /gold striped curtains. The couches are yellowy cream colour but we may be changing them to cream and getting an L shaped couch. The bookcase came with the place so we probably move that out and the sideboard is going in the kitchen where there is a glass cabinet at the moment ( ill also attach photo of the kitchen) and will be getting a different one for the space. The TV stand is a warm oak and the nest of tables are beech. I can't decide on whether to get an oak and cream painted coffee table like this One http://www.greatfurnituretradingco.c...m-coffee-table .I saw it in a shop in dublin but they don't have it online to link it to. Or else a light oak one see image attached. I like the matching sideboard to the light oak coffee table but was unsure if I got both it'd be too matched. Our living room is north facing so a cold room so would want furniture to warm it up. Would get a rug aswell for under the coffee table. Was thinking of putting floating cream shelves above the sideboard and then a nice picture above the couch at the back of the room. I've attached photos of my living room and the furniture. What do people think?? Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Help! how should I arrange my living room furniture?

I'd love some advice on how to arrange my living room furniture, starting with a completely blank canvas. The room will be used as a child-free retreat, mainly in the evenings for reading, watching movies and some entertaining. The window faces south east so it is bright during the day and looks over the front garden. We will probably get built ins around the fireplace to store books. I am thinking about getting a corner sofa oriented towards the tv on the right side of the fireplace but I am worried then that the wall opposite the window will just be blank. I'd like to put a chair there too but when you are entering the room I think it will appear to stick out a lot. What could I put on that wall? Could I orient the room the opposite way by putting the tv on the left of the fireplace or would that feel strange entering the room between couches? Would it be better if the door opened the opposite way? What size should the sofa be, given the room is 4.1x4.2m? I have attached a diagram of the room layout and what I am thinking currently. Any suggestions welcome! Thank you!

It's a really nice symmetrical room. I think your idea will work perfectly. Piano opposite the door right of the fireplace. Try it and if you don't like it you could always place it in the bay window area assuming it fits? I think your layout ideas will work very well.

Hi Frances,

What a lovely space, thank you for sharing your project, as Isla has pointed out it is a nice symmetrical space already, and you can always change things around once you start using the space from a functional perspective.

Enclosed an image of roughly the same layout you are going for (apologies this is a Grand Piano, but you can see the idea) they have opted to frame the walls in white panelling to bring back the symmetry into the space.
