How to furnish this living room to make it cozier?

Hello, I am struggling to find the right furniture for this living/family room to make it more welcoming and cozy. We are getting a new couch and chairs and and I like the idea of a sectional but I’m afraid it would be overpowering.

Some details/obstacles:

The bay window has a built in radiator and my dog sits on it

I realize there are too many pieces in this room, advice on what to take out is appreciated too

The TV needs to stay where it is, thats where the connections are

Traffic walks from the front door through here to the dining room

I need furniture that is comfortable, not just looks nice

The room is 12 x 18, rug is 9x12

I think your room just needs a couple of tweaks and am thinking your your current seating looks comfortable. Not sure a sectional will fit the bill for you, as they are quite low. Maybe a throw or two around on what you currently have will up the comfort without the expense of new furniture. The other tweaks I’d suggest is using the buffet as the tv stand as it’s a lovely piece but it’s taking a back seat in its current location. You could swap the table if you would like a display place or the table could leave the room altogether.. Whilst removing, take out the lower white table. The nest of tables could come off the wall and be between the two chair it’s the lamp over them, creating a little area there.

Hi, I think the way to bring a cosy feel to the room is introducing lots of textures and fabrics. This could be through cushions and throws. Your current sofa and armchairs also have quite rigid arms which visually have less of a cosy feel over a rounded arm. This could be something to consider when looking for your new sofa. If you feel the sectional will be overpowering you could look for a chaise end sofa which gives you the option to put your feet up, however it won't impose on the room as much.

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

Two ideas. Both times I would block up the entrance to the second half of the room to make more usuable space. Both ideas have a island with a dining table attached. Obviously these drawings are not to scale but everything should fit in. I would utilise the kitchen cuboards for utilities- intergrated appliances. If you can dont forget to use the space under your stairs as well. Also use the long wall at the bottom of the stairs for extra storage and alcoves.

Just to add your dog is lovely and not an obstacle ; ) Seriously, your room is very nice. Great comments so far. A few plants could help add to the homely look.

It’s a lovely room and an even lovelier dog! Without buying a thing for now, I would take the book shelves out of the room, centralise the sofa on the existing wall, move the buffet to where the shelves are now and see how that works. The tv would be better on the opposite side but as you have the connections there that’s fine. Matching lamps on the side tables, large cushions in a colour you like and I would consider changing your curtains in time to a good quality linen. I think the colour of the woodwork is a little stark against the cream walls but it is a big job to repaint these but you may do that in time. I like your matching chairs and your rug.
