Help with extractor fan please

I have had a chimney extractor fan fitted in my very small kitchen as part of a refurb. I don't think it looks right? I would appreciate any opinions either way please

It will look a lot better once the wall has been painted. It’s quite high relative to the wall units but if an extractor is too low one is always hitting one’s head on it. Given the tight space you have, it’s a functional solution, albeit not amazing to look at.

Thank you Angie for taking the time to give me an opinion. I guess I am not used to it as before I had a small cupboard and small extractor fan, not a chimney extractor fan. I have had to go with a 50cm wide extractor. All the glass chimney extractor fans are 60cm wide, too wide for the gap

I assume you mean a wood burning stove as fireplace as opposed to a wood burning stove as cooking stove? Takes all kinds to make a world and it's not the first time I've seen the idea. It depends on the strength of the fan. Pulling too many cubic feet per minute may suck smoke and carbon monoxide into the living area from the stove. Make up air ventilation, outside air, is required for fans over a certain CFM. I can't quote code on this one, but the make up air prevents negative pressure within the house. A sealed combustion firebox is probably OK, the air for combustion on such a unit would also come form outside. The EPA rated wood burning fireplace from Fireplace Xtrodinaire is an example. Hope this helps...a call to your local building department may answer your question better.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. I contemplated going with a different lighter sofa colour but practicality won in the end!

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Why don't you have an L shape and use the area under the window also for your sink and a couple of extra units? you could add shelves on either side of the window? Not sure why your fridge has to go at that end? might be best at the other end? As Sarah, suggests, get full height cupboards, and put the microwave in one of those, so that you're not losing so much space. Extra storage is probably more useful than having the microwave on display? It can easily be put on a shelf within a cupboard. (Our isn't even in our kitchen, but then we only use it once a week or so... so really depends) I'd also suggest drawers to the bottom of your units instead of cupboards.

Looks off centre because it's not central to the hob. Why did you only have a 50cm gap? Looks like you had 60cm before.

Thank you for your comments Sara. It may be the way the photo was taken that makes it look off centre. I have had replacement cupboard fronts & doors etc. The old cupboards had brown on the edge - the picture before shows this. The fitter put new edges on so the cupboard edges matched. This took up about 6 cm in total.. I was originally hoping for a glass extractor but this fitted so its what I have got....... I personally don't really like it. I just wanted to get some more opinions before I complain & get it changed but for what I have no idea

Looks fine to me. Here’s an image of a similar hood, but wider, if that helps at all.

It sounds like the fitter has done exactly what you asked. But for me the solution should have been to reduce the width of the wall cabinets so the extractor isn’t crowded

Thanks Jonathan. I guess he had to work with the existing cupboards as I was only having new cupboard fronts. I dont know what to say atm. I just feel underwhelmed with the extractor fan. The rest of the kitchen is fine

At first glance it just looks to small. I agree with Jonathan that the cupboards are crowding so not what u want but maybe they need to come down

Thanks everyone for commenting so far. The issue is I am on a tight budget & have only so much to spend on my kitchen refurb so taking the cupboards down isnt an option.
