I hope to add a stone top (either marble or granite) so the end result would look similar to the picture of the table below. (The Etsy seller says they can leave the wood top off and add extra supporting beams to attach the stone top). However ideally I'd like to be able to move the island so I'd have it on castors. However I was wondering if the combination of a stone top + castors would be unstable/dangerous? Does anyone have any experience of making something siimilar?
You could use piano casters. I had some put on a very large table with stone top and it's been fine, and easy to move. They have little brakes too, so it stays still.
Hi, we have a marble top coffee table on wooden frame (similar idea) - it needs 2-3 persons to move, and largely just sits in one location now as it’s quite heavy to move (no wheels). I would consider the size of the top and therefore the weight.
I don't think the weight will be an issue as long as it is not a very finely supported island. If you require castors then make sure that the legs are straight not turned to a bun foot like your image. You need as much leg as possible to fix the castors. If you go for a 20mm thick marble or slate top you will not have a problem with weight or moving it. Get the castor type with brakes so that you can lock the position once you have the right spot for it.
