White counter tops

Hi,
I would love to hear from people who have white counter tops (corian or other manmade material). I love the look however I need the countertops and island to be practical. I do not want to worry about hot pans damaging it or chopping food scratching the surface.
I would really benefit from your experience!

Thank you for your comments. I found the e-how experts article very interesting as it sounds like quartz has all the qualities I'm looking for.
I currently have black granite and it is super durable, and even though i do use chopping boards for hygiene purposes, you really can do anything to it! However, in the new house we are building, I want a change of style and love the look of crisp white countertops.....I don't know if I'm brave enough to take a chance on them!

We just add white quart in our kitchen remodel. So far so good. It is more durable than marble and it cleans up really easily. It is one item in the kitchen that I would keep if I were doing it again.

We also have white quartz. You are not supposed to put hot pans directly on it nor small appliances that get hot like a crock pot. I have not found using trivets to be an inconvenience. I also cut on a large butcher block so that has not been an issue either. It is very easy to clean and I am very happy with it. I am not aware of a completely white counter material that you would not need to protect from hot pots.

Hot pots should stay on the stove, on a stone/metal trivet or on a thick butcher block that can be scorched and put away. The heat from hot pots and pans can discolor whatever is on/in the granite (sealers, cooking oil in the porous surface), cause seams to open on engineered stone and solid surface tops. Suggest your read the Use and Care Manuals published by the manufacturers available on line.

our kitchen come living room floor is going to have light beige tiles and we are thinking of fb winborne white on cabenits and white quartz counter tops.. our furniture is a stained oak dining table with white legs with navy fabric chairs, couch is blue/grey with off white cushions, we have been advised to go with fb amonite or shaded white for walls but they seem very dark and i dont know do i particulary like them. i would love some advice on wall colours please .thanks in advance. 1st picture is of tile with cabinet colour and countertop with amonite to the left and shaded white on the right. 2nd pic is dining table chair. 3rd is dining table. 4th is coffee table.

White granite is beautiful but the lighter a granite is the more porous it is thus hard to seal well. Experience says avoid in busy kitchen

HI -- Quartz counter tops are basically indestructible. But , you still have to have common sense when using these counters or granite or marble . You should not be cutting on them (not good for the knives) or putting hot pots and pans on them etc. Using wood cutting boards and protective trivets and hot pads is still preferred in keeping them in good shape . If your household is hard on counter surfaces , then stainless steel is the best to have . That's what is used in professional kitchens .

Yes, I hear quartz is a good option. The one knock on solid surface that I hear relates to hot pots and pans. Heat can damage formica and corian more easily than other materials. If you are going to put hot pans directly on your counters and chop vegetables or cut bread on them without a cutting board I don't think there is any material that will stand up to both of those practices except, as lefty notes, stainless steel. But if your counters will get standard usage I don't see a problem with white quartz or white corian.

I have a white corian and love it. It brightened the kitchen so much. I think the Only thing you can set hot pots on is ceramic tile. I have made trivets out of pretty tiles. Go to the store and find a tile you love buy one or two and then cut felt slides that stick, like for the bottom of a chair leg or buy precut ones. These are great! I use them on lots of things. They are under my coffee pot, toaster, large cutting board, garbage bowl I keep on the counter, anything I move that's kind of big or heavy on the counter. Corian requires no sealing. Only thing that has thought about staining so far was grated carrots, or the skin gratings from carrots. But then I just worked on the spot lightly with a scotch bright pad. I saw somewhere that someone else tried a mr clean eraser n corian. Staining in my integrated white sink is zero. Installed in January 2013. I have had corian in a previous house with no problems also.
