What do I need to consider for built-in robes around a fireplace?
I am planning to put wardrobes on either side of the fireplace in my daughter's room (first pic) – I favour a modern look to contrast with the federation features in the room, so am choosing a flat profile with slimline black handles. ( a bit like the handle type in 2nd pic). One side will be for clothes the other for other storage. The first will have a shelf at the top, hanging space and drawers ( all inside), the second just shelves ( adjustable).I'm planning vivid white 2pac doors in satin as the other woodwork in the room is vivid white. I think the ceilings are 3.3 m, I was going to go for 2.5 m doors on the built ins. The walls are not square so the cabinet maker will use spaces. Is there anything else I should consider and do you thing the relative height of the doors and ceiling will look ok together? Does anyone have any photos of something similar that they can post ( most pics online are of shaker style doors). Thanks for any input.

Comments (19)That wall paper doesn't go at all.. and you don't need wallpapers.. how about a cream shade on the fireplace part of wall with oxblood coloured (from your curtain flowers) horizontal band below mantel, while the rest of the walls be lilac? Ever considered stoenwork similar to your fireplace on that wall? Also lower the hung photographs.. should be at least four inches below the windows' top edge.. Your sofas are quite dark. they seem aubergine.. is there any way you can at least place one of the sofas across from a window so that light falls on it? right now it is in the shadows backed against the windows, therefore more dark (does it seem so when you're in the room too?) The mirror (though nice) is too solid and thick for the mantel. can it go on a clearer stretch of some wall? fourth wall? What is the fourth wall like? idk how the fourth wall is like but how about angling large sofa at 90 degrees to the window with the single seater also angled in the corner where the lamp is.. and place the side table with lamp infront of the window (i-e at the corner of the 'L' made by t he sofas).. If possible get lighter lamp shades (cream).. Love the cushions.. place two of these cushions on the single seater to relieve the large sofa.. Please turn the rug lengthwise along the length of the sofa.. get a glass/metal table (if tots allow) or cream ottomon as center table.. The TV is too large for the rack, no? The vase is being wasted under the tv.. Florals and stripes can be mixed depending on print.. but if you bring anymore florals in this room, it would be best to match the flower shape to those in the curtains. Comments (21)I agree with victoriabunglowranch, scrub it and repaint in one of the colours of the piece, I'd personally head towards dark and moody colours for walls, with crisp white ceilings, how about wrapping the chimney in smokey mirror in same shade that you paint the wall, I agree floor is very busy, would like to see a large rug here to keep the focus on the fireplace and I'd keep the "mantle area" free from objects, the fire place is enough, art work on side walls and floral pieces on coffee tables or buffets, I'd also choose luxe furniture and fabrics in one of the lighter shades shown in the fireplace, perhaps with a slight leaning towards art deco in some pieces and then spice up with accent cushions, art, lamps and lighting. Comments (21)Love your carpet choices here! I noticed that there no artwork on the walls yet. This will elevate the mood of the room since you will need an upper emphasis once your room is anchored with the carpet. It is easier to decorate around a rug, the one you love for sure, than around a focal piece, such as art. After you choose from any of the beautiful carpets above that work with your interior, take a photo of the room with the carpet installed in it. Have fun looking for the artwork that best sings with your carpet. and that grabs you. After you have the choice of art up on the wall, look for small accessories of colour of shape, size and texture that work with the whole composition last. Comments (8)Well we live in a flat on the 4th floor in Edinburgh city. So we loved the thought of being able to expose the original stone walls of the flat. You can see from the pictures that we had it done for the kitchen and lounge. Since everything of ours are modern, the stone wall really brings an edge to the design. And in the lounge, we painted it the Farrow & Ball Downpipe which we think really sets it off next to the stone. Especially with the mouldings on the window, the lounge has become quite a grand looking space even without any furnishings. And we didn't even get to varnish the walls as we liked the way it looked now. There doesn't seem to be any problems with the dust coming off the walls....See MoreJE C

4 years agotricky to do full depth robes flanking a fireplace without making it all feel boxed in/squeezed and highlighting the depth difference. These spaces are better for shelves or shallower storage. Can you find a different position for the robe? In regards to style, contemporary can work well if it's super cleanly detailed as it will bring out the fireplace as a feature

4 years agoThanks Paul. I found a great picture on Houzz and it has made me confident it can look good. But maybe it needs some drawers to break it up. My daughter doesn' t want shelves as she has decided to be a minimalist ( which I am encouraging) . This is really the only logical placw for the robe. If I have a drawer or 2 on each side at the bottom I think I need a different handle - or none. Thoughts anyone? Thanks

4 years agoWould going back through the walls to recess the joinery work? The front of the cabinets could be either flush with or slightly behind the fireplace. Making them recede a bit would emphasise the fireplace and you could go all the way to the ceiling and have the cornice look very intentional. (Would look great with flat panels as it would basically just look like a wall.) Obviously depends on what is next door.

This is what we did with robes either side of the fireplace in the master bedroom in our terrace. There is both hanging space and drawers behind the cupboard doors

4 years agoRhs too narrow for second wardrobe. Existing mirrored wardrobe is huge but takes up a hole wall behind the door, Leaving me with one wall to put my bed on western side. Am I weird ?, I don’t like my head on west side in bed either. Sash windows on the other. See if I can work my iPad to draw a plan later.
