Fireplace dilemma?

Hi
I recently purchased a property and have a dilemma on whether to demolish the 'art deco' fireplace or keep (but modernise). From the photo, I'm edging towards demolish. Any opinions welcomed including options to improve aesthetic!!

It looks like the floor has bubbled up in front of the fireplace.

Were it me, I would be a little sad about doing it, but I'd tear that puppy down and put up something to match the style I like and want to express in the rest of the home. What is your style?

Do as you wish, it's your home now so put your stamp on it but keep w/in some confines of the style of home ( unless you're changing it totally). Best of joy to you in your new home.

I have a dilemma with wallpaper. There is a 3 seater dark navy sofa with matching chaired, a wooden fireplace surround and a bay window in the room. The fireplace and skirting boards are going to be painted cream. I don't know what wallpaper to put on the fireplace wall to warm up the room a bit. Main colour scheme is silvery grey paint, very dark couch and chairs and black. Photos attached.

I would not demolish a lovely vintage fireplace. What kind of look are you going for? An Art Deco aesthetic has lovely clean lines and with this kind of detail you elevate your room from a white box to something with history and uniqueness.

It might not be in style, but it is the style of the house. If you want to change it something "trendy" you are going to lose a conversation piece. I would imagine most people would come in and be like "what an awesome fireplace". One thing, I have learned if it is an orignal to the house, leave it.

See if you can work with it with your art and furniture, live with it, get feed back and hopefully you will embrace it's unique style. Personally, I love it!

Thanks everyone, appreciate all your great and positive feedback. Think I'll keep the "puppy" but will do some minor work to enhance it while I'm carrying out extensive remodelling of the house. Thanks again.

I'm so glad you are keeping it. Try giving it a good scrub and repaint the walls with a warmer color, like antique white or coca or tan, that works with the colors of the piece. The busy floor and the stark white walls aren't doing it any favors. In the right setting, it could look fabulous.

I like the lines of it. It's very interesting! I see that you are keeping it, which I LOVE! Wonder if you could just replace/update the tile choice without ruining the integrity of the original design. Just a thought! I think it's really cool, just don't love the colors of it...but I agree with the comment above...in the right setting it can be fabulous as is...if that thing could talk, I wonder what kind of stories it would tell!

I would have to consider redesigning the room to fit around it., it's so dominant. But has a lot of character, too.

I agree with victoriabunglowranch, scrub it and repaint in one of the colours of the piece, I'd personally head towards dark and moody colours for walls, with crisp white ceilings, how about wrapping the chimney in smokey mirror in same shade that you paint the wall, I agree floor is very busy, would like to see a large rug here to keep the focus on the fireplace and I'd keep the "mantle area" free from objects, the fire place is enough, art work on side walls and floral pieces on coffee tables or buffets, I'd also choose luxe furniture and fabrics in one of the lighter shades shown in the fireplace, perhaps with a slight leaning towards art deco in some pieces and then spice up with accent cushions, art, lamps and lighting. Art Deco can carry contemporary pieces too, be brave here this could be a very special room with it's own personality and with care it will still link to the other areas of the house.

If you could find a stone or tile that matches the outer part of the fireplace ... I would bring it all the way up! Just a thought :)

QUESTION: What is the device on the floor of the firebox ? (Kinda looks like a hotplate upon which you were preparing a souffle but forgot.....? )

We hate to see fireplaces removed, so our vote would be to keep it. :) But what could update it and bring it to a more modern, versatile fireplace space would be to cover the exisiting fireplace (we're partial to using stone) and build it all the way up to the ceiling. That style of fireplace really gives a great, lasting focal point to the room and can also help the room to appear bigger. You could build out the fireplace slightly and then add stone veneer right on top of that and continue up. It would be beautiful. Congrats on the new home!

Demolish it. It might be Art Deco inspired but not true to the style. What year was the house built in?

This is an old post and they decided to keep it. It is definitely of the style and period--a Google search doesn't distinguish between new and old versions of Art Deco, and Art Deco was a diverse style. The poster didn't say, but this really looks like a British style fireplace, which is quite different from an American one.
