solid timber benchtops

Hi. What product do you use / apply to your timber benchtops to make them waterproof and protected, without them losing their natural beauty? Thanks.

Hi Melissa, We use a product called Osmo Polyx Oil on our timber bench tops. It is an all natural hardwax oil. With blonde timbers we tend to use the 1% White (3044L) which maintains the natural colouring. This particular one is a two pack which has darkened the American Oak slightly. Hello Mary, Yes some good advice here about moving the sofa from the front of the window.. What you want really is to create some symmetry between rooms whilst allowing them some individuality.. That comes with differing height furnishings such as the two cabinets and the tables.. Definitely paint the cabinets- that way they blend in to the alcove and appear less solid allowing the room to breathe. If you were to paint the chimney breast a different colour this will give the two fireplaces greater impact! Something to accent the purple curtains and cushions I'd suggest a darker shade of grey or Purple but not entirely sure what colour the sofa's are... Black, Brown, Aubergine?? ..You have a double room so show it off! I would not take away that wooden armchair... It is slightly more subtle and is good to have- again can't tell what colour the fabric is...Green, Grey?? So consider that if the painting sounds like a nice idea to you.. I would also like to suggest getting another mirror for the front fireplace similar or the same as you have in the rear of the room. Mirrors add something and bounce light... It also gives a sense of symmetry with the two fireplaces... Re- arrange the existing pictures.. One really good way to tone down the size and density of those sofas and armchair is to have some nicely chosen throws and cushions and - even simply folded down the back and place the big leather armchair at an angle in the far end part of the room... I would place the sofas so they face each of the fireplaces in both rooms as you have two of each! Turn the coffee table round too, so it aligns with the sofa. Simple lines are needed whilst keeping the windows and french doors as free as possible. The single armchair with the wooden arm rests could sit in front of one of the alcoves...With the book shelving behind, so you can sit and read in the cosy armchair next to the fire... : ))

Hello egreevy, Okay, yes I see, it's a difficulty but maybe not impossible... Just whether you want to try to find out more about this.. Taking windows out to paint is a bigger job but it may still be possible.. ... So for the immediate.. Paint the front door (just the door) it might give a nice finish to have the side windows white.. Then you have a bit of contrast like your image above.. and add window boxes with lovely foliage or buxus.. it will work with the green you already have... I couldn't see as my screen was dimmed.. I think leaving all the ivy colour you have at present would be really nice.. (hence my suggestion of more green!! Also I wouldn't paint the pebble dash, to me it looks absolutely fine on the house itself.. Maybe the small boundary wall at the front and a bit of the garage.. Also a flat box hedge coming over the top of the boundary wall could be nice too.. It will be lovely and green.. : ) )

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.
