Please help with trying

to tie two rooms toget

her. Knocked archway between them but they still look disjointed. Have to keep the 2 matching sofas and armchair. What way should I arrange furniture. Do i need more furniture. Should i paint slelf units?

The first thing is to move the armchair from the archway. It is blocking the flow and also, because it has its back to the other couch, it is emphasising the fact that these are two separate rooms.

It's difficult to see from the pictures where you could put it, maybe it could go where the other mismatched armchair is and that chair could go to another room?

I would definitely change the shelving units. If possible, I would remove them altogether and replace them with open shelves in cream or maybe oak. If you have to keep them, can you remove the doors? And paint or stain them.

I would also consider a built in unit for the TV, finished to match the new shelves. The pictures above the TV should be rehung a little lower.

Some purple or pink touches on the TV area, maybe a rug, would tie the two rooms together more.

Thanks for that. Yes, I'm thinking of taking away the mismatched chair and replacing it with the brown armchair...but then that leaves me with just a 2-seater sofa in one half of the room. Thinking of taking glass doors off wall presses and having open shelving or maybe even remove the top half of the units, maybe putting wooden doors on the lower half, adding a new tv unit to match. Then painting them all a lighter colour. Have to keep the units because the timber floor is fitted up to the units. Should I put a matching armchair up nearer the new tv unit. There will be more room when we get the flat screen.

Will the radiator be an issue if you want to put TV to left of fireplace? Though it is a more prominent position, you could put the TV over to the right of the fireplace. Back to the window is better as regards glare on the screen if you are watching it during the day time. I would put your sofa in the middle of the room facing the fireplace. then I would put an armchair with its back to the window pointing in towards the sofa. This can be pulled sort of in front of the TV/ forward from the TV which will push the TV into the background and demonstrate that it is not your dominant feature. When you do want to watch TV you can push the armchair over a bit so you can see the TV from the sofa. Alternatively, put the TV with its back to the wall around where the mirror is leaning in your picture. And use houseology's great TV unit on castors idea whichever side you choose! Simple yet genius as you can push the TV right into the corner out of the way when not using - might use that one myself.

I think the only place you could put a tv is probably the corner by the window...over the fireplace is probably too high. a walnut floor and new fresher paint colour would be lovely, would you consider painting the skirting boards and fireplace white or off white to modernise them a bit? we've painted the skirting in our living room (also a walnut floor) and it looks so much better than before. (Have yet to get around to the rest of the house!!)

I agree, blinds, they are large windows so that is a lot of material / expense if you go down the curtain route, plus curtains may block out light. We have sliding doors like yours and have chosen to keep them free of any covering, however we are not overlooked. You might also want to consider translucent / sheer roller blinds which offer moderate privacy yet still retain a degree of visibility. We have them on our front windows for privacy as we are in a single storey house / bungalow, people can't see in (during the day) but we can see out. We also have curtains with them in the sitting room as we wanted it to be more cosy / private at night. In the other rooms we have another blind that sits over the sheer blinds, but this wouldn't work for all windows.

A flat screen TV will make a big difference as that will give you some space and make the focus the fireplace not the TV as well. Agree with removing the leaded glass doors too. Do you absolutely have to keep the leather suit? They are not the biggest of rooms and the chairs and sofas are HUGE! Will the sofa go where the mismatched chair is? That would mean you don't have a sofa in front of the window.

Just spotted the table to the left of the fireplace in the TV room. Could that go where the TV is with the new flat screen on top of it? The big chair could then take its place?

Thanks for the help. I'm definitely going to take away the top half of the units. I'll paint the lower part, maybe a cream colour, get rid of mismatched chair and tv, move everything around a bit. Great to have an independent eye looking at the room.

Hello Mary, Yes some good advice here about moving the sofa from the front of the window.. What you want really is to create some symmetry between rooms whilst allowing them some individuality.. That comes with differing height furnishings such as the two cabinets and the tables.. Definitely paint the cabinets- that way they blend in to the alcove and appear less solid allowing the room to breathe. If you were to paint the chimney breast a different colour this will give the two fireplaces greater impact! Something to accent the purple curtains and cushions I'd suggest a darker shade of grey or Purple but not entirely sure what colour the sofa's are... Black, Brown, Aubergine?? ..You have a double room so show it off! I would not take away that wooden armchair... It is slightly more subtle and is good to have- again can't tell what colour the fabric is...Green, Grey?? So consider that if the painting sounds like a nice idea to you.. I would also like to suggest getting another mirror for the front fireplace similar or the same as you have in the rear of the room. Mirrors add something and bounce light... It also gives a sense of symmetry with the two fireplaces...

Re- arrange the existing pictures.. One really good way to tone down the size and density of those sofas and armchair is to have some nicely chosen throws and cushions and - even simply folded down the back and place the big leather armchair at an angle in the far end part of the room... I would place the sofas so they face each of the fireplaces in both rooms as you have two of each! Turn the coffee table round too, so it aligns with the sofa. Simple lines are needed whilst keeping the windows and french doors as free as possible. The single armchair with the wooden arm rests could sit in front of one of the alcoves...With the book shelving behind, so you can sit and read in the cosy armchair next to the fire... : ))

Advice taken. I'm going to move furniture straight away so i can see how the light improves. Can't wait to get started!
