Advice how to make gravelled front garden more attractive?
Hello I'm hoping to get some advice on how to make our front look more pretty.
i always seem to get the flowers and pots wrong.
Iv iv had to move the lavenders from the front as they fall over to frequent with the wind.the sun only comes round in the morning and unfortunately we can't replace the gravel etc at the moment

Comments (4)I really think it's the plants that are supposed to be the center of attraction so I have a hard time thinking of anything better than painting the wall gray and the planters charcoal. However, trying to keep an open mind I did locate the photo above with yellow planters, which would be pretty against a gray wall. But looking at your very lovely blue door, I could see repeating that very same color on the planters and leaving the wall gray. It's always a good thing to repeat an existing color when it looks as great as that one does. To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Comments (8)Your house is very attractive but a little TLC is required. If possible depending on budget limitations, I would do the following to soften the edges and add a manicured, polished yet homely feeling to the house: Area needing attention: Front door and surrounds Issue: Lack of a focal point, has no presence and appears to recess into the house • Remove all potted plants from outside the front door • Remove the seat from under the main window • Rent/borrow a water power washer to clear away the moss/weeds • Paint the front door (if wood) a dolphin grey colour and add a door wreath (radiates warmth) • Purchase 2 potted Bay trees (Laurus Nobilis) to be placed either side of the newly painted front door to frame the doorway • Put up a postbox on the wall to the right of the front door • Add 2 external candle lanterns to enhance the ambience for house viewings...See MoreAdvice on Kitchen/Utility renovation
Comments (3)Hi - its such a big and important project, i really think you need to sit down with a good kitchen designer and fully tease out your requirements and then look at every possible layout option. by sitting down with someone, they will draw each possible layout to scale in front of you and that way you will be able to see the pros and cons of each design. it makes decision making much easier best of luck with the project Barry...See MoreKerry B

6 years agoI would consider softening the shape of the gravel, and planting around it with lots of wind tolerant plants like grasses. This would allow you to add a bit of height without it being blown over!

6 years agoHey Kerry, Great ideas from everybody else above. Personally, I am a fan of planting a lot of the same thing to get that impact. So I would choose tall grasses. I would also considering purchasing some buxus balls which will look wonderful. I did a similar project earlier this summer using such gravel and buxus only, which is available on my profile.

6 years agoYou could also choose artificial grass for instant green. The existing concrete edging and weed barrier won’t be a problem as they would be for planting. For visual interest you could add pots or low maintenance decorative stonework. I saw an interesting hack for creating stone balls without garden centre prices where an inexpensive glass light fitting globe was used as a mold for concrete and smashed when it set.
