Routed handles on kitchen drawers that can be difficult to get a grip on when fully loaded.

Handles that give good grip purchase but can get caught on as you walk by.

Routed handles look nice and sleek but there is something about handles that make me smile. Until I smash my knees on them 1000 times and end up looking like a 4 day old peach at the bottom of a primary school kids bag!

My 2¢ worth: first of all replace the dark blinds with translucent cordless single cell blinds in ivory or off-white--they let light through and provide privacy + some insulation from cold or heat. Clean, crisp look.That alone will brighten up this space. #2: clear the counterspace!--so much clutter! Where to put all these appliances that get little daily use? Get yourself a ss 24x20 or larger cart on wheels (see Amazon.com--Seville classic ss cart) and store little used, bulky appliances on its shelves--and roll the cart into a nearby coat closet--out of sight and way-- to be wheeled back when needed or individually carried back as needed. 3#gorgeous blue tiled walls.Don't touch them. #4:Walls: keep as is if off-white--not same as trim white white.Just a fresh coat needed.To make it "disappear," paint the radiator the same color as the wall behind it. #5Keep the white trim white--looks bright and clean.Keep kitchen door white. You might want to stop here and make no further changes #6Cabinets: I like Gast pic above on right, but too much blue for your blue-tiled kitchen...IMO. I'd go cooler and lighter...consider the light gray of the beadboard in the Gast pic above right. Beautiful hue. Don't go for the white white everyone clamors for these days.Too stark for your kitchen and too contrasty with the blue tile, too country kitchenish. #7. cabinet hardware: Look like glass knobs in pics. Go for knobs/pulls like in the Gast pic above--or similar in pewter or ss, my preference. Those "modern" ss bar handles don't work with your cabinets. #8 the round table is not a good fit against the wall. Get a small sq or rectangular ss or butcherblock-top table for that spot. Chop off the top tier of your chairs to shorten....and match their tops as they are now so's won't appear to take up so much visual space and still remain comfy--don't replace w/ uncomfortable stools.Keep white. #9. Do away with wood valance over sink window.Too country. #10 Countertops--solid color Corian type or laminate--depends on budget--don't want busy stone textures of quartz, etc. Consider a medium value cool gray. (Or maple butcherblock?). Can't see color/texture of floor.... hope some of this helps. Good luck! lisianthus' pic tho nice is too busy-cutesy for your minimalist aims IMO

East Kent Eco - again thank you for your input. As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Is there a solution to waterproof the cupboard?

It looks very good James. Even though as you say it was a clients design build, it works fine. Once the Island has stools it will fill it out better. Has that naked look at the moment. The position of the wine rack might cause issues but overall it looks like a really clean and fresh kitchen. Plenty of natural light and the colours compliment each other. The extractor is a nice feature too. Everyone has different opinions as I see on here but if the client is happy with it then job done. Looks really well fitted too.....well done :)

Hello Edele, Well one way to maximise space is to reconsider the appliance aspect. So for example you could have a free standing range oven.. which will have hob and oven in 1 piece. This could give you much more space to play with, so possibly you might want a double height fridge, which would be best placed to go at the other end.. The other thing you could easily do is take out those shelves above the worktop and instead have a row of shelving on the rear wall.. Then you could have a row of cabinets all along the top. This gives a slightly different feel to the kitchen, making it more streamlined but also potentially offering you more storage space.. Re positioning the cabinets and painting them can also achieve a new look whilst using what you have.. Replacing the handles with touch/open mechanism hinges on the inside also gives the cupboards a really stylish appearance and nickel or brass (depending on colour of cabinet door) cup handle for the drawers... . If you were to take away the armchair.. you may be able to move along the table a little, add two chair to the head of the table to seat 6 and then at the other end on the far wall (where I suggested some shelving) have a butchers block or table for additional food prep... It could have wheels so you could use it when dining for serving and so forth.. : ))

No handles definitely looks better. Agree about trying to keep them clean if you don't have handles though. But I find trying to clean around the handles annoying though!

What about the push to open doors, drawers may need either handles or grooves but clean lines are the modern way.

Personal taste & practicality chooses in the end!

Neither! The 'sharknose' as it's known is not not enough to grip especially when a drawer is fully laden with heavy plates etc. The paint often chips from being hit with wedding rings etc also. I do like handles but I like the option we chose for our new kitchen pictured below much more. There is a full panel width gap behind each drawer front to fit your fingers in to get a good grip on the drawer and the contrast of timber behind each black drawer looks pretty good too!

No handles is definitely a design driven home owner, Handles date but is definitely a a more comfortable functional decision. DDB Design would always go with great design elements when creating a kitchen as this room says every thing about the home, definitely no handles !!

I voted no handles based on the only other scenario of getting caught on handles.

No fool is going to choose handle if that was going to happen but I would really prefer handles that were safe and agree with cag63 that handles keep draws cleaner.

Definitely prefer handles. Have had routed handles and often lost finger nails. They also get rather grubby.

@LouieT - I have one push to open cupboard (outside of kitchen bench) and am forever cleaning finger prints off it.

All these sleek minimalist kitchens are starting to look more like hotel bars than places you cook every day for the family. Handles definitely for practicality, just as with appliances ON the bench so you can actually cook in your kitchen without dragging it out of the hidden cabinetry or gadgety lifting shelves that will probably break with regular family use. They look like fake kitchens for people who don't really cook. Where is the food and tools for preparation, why does everything have to be hidden? The most hardworking room in the house, the one we all gather around, enjoy the wonderful aromas and yummy food deserves more.

I sort of do agree with you that hiding everything away till it's needed seems a little fake but when you live in a home as I do at present, with a very tiny kitchen and everything is out because there's nowhere to put it away, consequently, I have a very limited prep area, so in my new kitchen, I can't wait till everything is in a draw or in a cupboard, so that I can enjoy the freedom of having a clear work area.

That doesn't mean I won't enjoy a cooking day where everything is brought out for it but most everyday cooking in my opinion, doesn't require all the big gun machines to be taking up bench space.

I'm afraid you might think my new kitchen will be one of these "fake" kitchens but I can assure you it won't be but remember most of the photo's that get shown on Houzz, have been professionally prepared for the photo, with nothing out of place, "minimalist" with a perfect vase of flowers and so on like the photo above!!

The comment thread is about "Handles or no Handles" for those deciding how to design their kitchen. How one uses the kitchen work space depends on many factors ,lifestyle, stage of life , family , no family, entertaining ,or corporate dinners and of course budget.

Some beautiful kitchens earn money if registered with location agencies and used for advertising , film and magazine shoots. The kitchen is the heart of the home and can be a great bread winner, no kitchen is fake, clutter or no clutter is very personal and as an interior designer it is the most fascinating room in the house.

I would go for handles, but get rounded ones - not the ones with sharp overhangs that clothes get caught on

If the bench top has some overhang, the same distance as the handles project out, it should prevent you catching on them when walking by. But again it is a different (less streamlined) look. Some handless-drawers are easier to open than others. But I prefer handles for practicality.

I also think that cupboards without knobs are not visitor friendly. A person has no idea which side to open a cabinet from, left or right. Also where do you hang your tea towels, when needing to dry your hands from the sink?

My tea towel sits anywhere on an flat surface of the kitchen whilst I'm flitting around doing all manner of stuff but in my case, I use it only to wipe my hands, so really it is not a teal towel but a hand towel. I never dry any dishes prefering to run hot water over them and leaving them to dry naturally given I do not have a dish washer although I have finally ordered one which I'll have before Xmas I hope!!

Anyway, if I am expecting guests or just a drop in for a cuppa, I put a new hand towel out and leave it neatly folded or draped over the dish rack.

Routed handles tend to collect food scraps and water, especially around the sink. Just select handles that will not catch you!

I generally use handles for ease of opening drawers etc. It's not hard to change them if they date. It's easy to avoid them catching; the bench top just needs to overhang by the same amount as the handle depth. The routed option is a cost saving that builders use to keep the budget down (they don't have to purchase the hardware). Any surface that has been routed and painted & the laminate removed is a surface that can absorb moisture in a kitchen/bathroom & have long term damage (and the exposed edges of laminate chip more easily).
