Kitchen re design

Looking for some inspiration of how to change our kitchen layout and maximise on space. We can't seem to figure out any other layouts that will work well in the space without knocking down walls. Do u have any suggestions? Thinking of widening the door into the kitchen to incorporate hallway into kitchen so it's more open plan?

Hello Edele,

Well one way to maximise space is to reconsider the appliance aspect. So for example you could have a free standing range oven.. which will have hob and oven in 1 piece. This could give you much more space to play with, so possibly you might want a double height fridge, which would be best placed to go at the other end.. The other thing you could easily do is take out those shelves above the worktop and instead have a row of shelving on the rear wall..

Then you could have a row of cabinets all along the top. This gives a slightly different feel to the kitchen, making it more streamlined but also potentially offering you more storage space.. Re positioning the cabinets and painting them can also achieve a new look whilst using what you have.. Replacing the handles with touch/open mechanism hinges on the inside also gives the cupboards a really stylish appearance and nickel or brass (depending on colour of cabinet door) cup handle for the drawers... .

If you were to take away the armchair.. you may be able to move along the table a little, add two chair to the head of the table to seat 6 and then at the other end on the far wall (where I suggested some shelving) have a butchers block or table for additional food prep... It could have wheels so you could use it when dining for serving and so forth..

don't open it up to the hallway as you will have to meet additional fire regulations.

I would fit your new kitchen in an Lshape so that you have work surface on more than the one wall you currently use.

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

All, Looking for advice from those who work in Kitchen Design. I recently finished my studies and am qualified Interior Designer (Higher Diploma BTEC). I am currently working at Kitchen Design Showroom. I was hired specifically do 3D Kitchen Renders / Presentation Packs / Face to Face presentation of proposed design to clients etc. I really love kitchens design and even though I am qualified designer, my course emphasis was Commercial Design (Hospitality / Retail outlets). I feel I have a lot to learn in order to feel confident to design kitchens (logical next step). Can anyone recommend good go to resources for Kitchen Designers - books, links? Am I best off learning on the job or do people think it would be worth doing a follow on Diploma specifically in Kitchen Design? Thanks everyone!

Thank you for responding so quickly. We going to change the kitchen as the one that there is nearly 20 years old. So moving around appliances etc be easy to do. I'm a bit confused about u suggesting a freestanding oven range? And where would u position this? Also I love island? Would I be mad to take table out and replace with Island?

Yes I'm thinking the l shape would work well actually and I might free up some space by the patio door to have the dinning table and chairs. I was thinking that alright about fire regs.... How about double door would that open it out a bit? I could knock into the utility and office room and make a bigger open plan kitchen but Id loose 2 rooms in the house,,,, is this madness? Or is it worth the sacrifice... I love open plan living u see

Hello Edele,

Welcome.. The free standing range oven would be situated where you have the hob.. Or if you re- design the whole thing it would sit where you want it but not next to either end wall, so I think somewhere where the hob is would be good....

I do like linear kitchens so galley would be my suggested... The other thing is I'm suggesting adding 2 chairs to the dining table, so not suggesting taking it away but moving it forward and instead take away the armchair..

So the rear wall would have more room to have a butchers block.. (it's not really an island.. : )) Would be good to see the plans to determine how best to adapt the space.. Might be easier adding onto the back into the garden. Then you could move dining further along and then have an island.. . : ))

I think an L shaped kitchen would work well. Your radiator takes up lots of room, a vertical one might be better or UFH if it's a complete gut out. Then you can use that wall.

If you don't have another dining area a table is better although you could do a long island with a dropped down table.

Good idea about the radiator aware going to replace this with a long vertical sleeker radiator. Thank u for idea
