Non "fru-fru" window treatments for kitchen, great room

Took down vinyl verticals and donated them. Like open look but sometimes at night, seems invasive. Ideas on kitchen and great room (one room can be seen from other) window treatments that allow clean, no fru-fru minimal look, occasional privacy, bit of style?? Willing to do custom if necessary but prefer to save $$

I agree with you and have replaced my 1990s thick, nubby, fabric-y ones with hideous POWDER blue and PEACH striping :-) with what's currently available. Clean, lightweight, cheap buy 'em off the rack at Home Improvement store!! I may dig a bit deeper in pocket for great room :-) I know there are really lovely, more formal ones.

Need help with a red carpet
Comments (28)Ok - currently saving money on carpet; already have pool table and lamp for this area. What about creating different seating areas in the room. You said there are built ins? Computer station? Family using this space. Here is MY suggestion: I would use MORE than one rug - each for specific areas of this room. You can have the sisal berbers made to fit - and I think ONE large one would actually end up being a little messy as this would be huge - and could get off bounds? (out of shape) You could have these bound and use them to create different areas within the larger space? Is that a gold or a taupe or beige color between the red pattern? Here is my suggestion : the opposite side of the color wheel tones down the other - since this is a red color - how about using a very soft BLUE/GREY on the ceiling? Or a very soft Grey/Blue? And a very soft taupe or mocha color on the walls - something which is within the SAME tonal family as the NON-red portion of your rug? This should go nicely with your brown sofa and the sisal or other type berbers? YES - get one larger one (RUG for the area in front of the TV . . . large enough to go from the baseboard area - to completely under your sofa? BTW - LAZYBOY makes beuatiful furniture - and you do NOT have to get the plumped and rolled ubiquitious leather chair. OR, I can personally, highly recommend FurnitureLa South, in Hickory N.C. - and they will deliver for FREE! Love that! They have a style for everyone and this is where they actually make the furniture. They sell ALL manufacturers at cost. Well not Lane or Ethan Allen. My one last thought - since this is such a very large space - I would also get a rather substantial and DARK drapery rod using finials - and extend the width of the drapes to help balance the room on the other side with the windows. Since you have built ins on the other side - this will help balance the space visually. IF you do not like the color of the fixture material on the pool table light - you can get any finish you desire in a rustoleium paint - I would consider spray painting this something in the neighborhood of a oil rubbed bronze; or something with more of a dark patina? This would also help balance out the room and bring focus into the space you are utilizing - the rest will fade away. SO - ceiling paint a must; paint the trim or add a more traditional trim - at least 5 inches in depth; TWO separate rugs - not one big one - at least one for now for the TV area; Extend your drapes and raise them almost to the ceiling to help balance the room; Darker drape rod - and double the fabric for your drapes to make them look fuller; Spray paint a darker finish on to the pool table fixture. Use a tone of paint on the wall which will go with the tone of the other color of your rug! Another thought: You consider finding an old wooden bench - or church pew ??? that would be fun; you could place facing into the space around the pool table area? This will give folks a place to sit and could help further define your separate areas?...See MoreSitting room
Comments (30)Hello the days are brightening up by now and I'm sure the room is looking less drab for it. However I think furniture rearranging will work wonders. You seem to have nice low window sills: show them off. If the sofa goes to the left between window and built-in unit you'll have a view out to the garden and more light in the room. Equally: can you fit the piano between the radiator and the double doors? Again: more light through the window. Low sills are a god-send, and so many of us are stuck with high ones. The room will feel more spacious with a good view to outdoors. The armchairs then: one to the left of the fireplace and one between the other window and piano. TV then between the two windows. (No shine on the screen) Does that fit maybe? Or do you need all five seats facing the TV? I rather like those stripy cushions. Can you find a striped wallpaper in matching colors and with an irregular pattern repeat for your accent wall? if going with wood floors how about a sheepskin rug for each of your doggies? Black or white. One last detail. A lower table for your side lamps would be good: At sofa arm or seat height. Coffee table could work in corner between window and new sofa position. Btw: I liked the suggestion to replace the cupboard doors above the fish tank with full-height ones. In some kitchen shops you can find ready-painted, wooden, panel doors that might fit. Comments (14)Thanks everyone. AMN - The lighting in the photo isn't great - the walls and venetian blinds are both white and the green is a wallpaper. I've a TV on one side and radiator on the other side of the wall but I do like the idea of painting it a different colour. What do you mean by "because the sectional is too big for the space already" thanks! Dar Eckert - like your suggestion of introducing another colour, I was thinking about aubergine but again it could be over modern and not the slightly warm vibe I'm looking for - what do you think? Carolyn - thanks for posting the rug, going to look it up and see about shipping costs etc to Ireland from that site. Really happy with the rooms but we've just had a baby and I want a bit more of a cosier feel with her around whilst still keeping with my modern twist!! Comments (53)Thanks a mil! That's the thing about new colour. It does take some getting used to. However I had my babies room, a spare room and the inside of my front door painted at the same time last week and love all of the colours chosen but this one I just can't look at. It turned out to be more of a minty green than the colour samples on the wall. One of the fabrics below are being make up in a footstool and I think it may be overkill with too much colour. I wanted the coushions and footstool to pop as those are the things you spend the most amount of money on rather than the paint. In saying that. The cost of the paint was expensive and also paying someone to do it. Now to do it all over again is not ideal.:(. i took the cushions and fabric into one of my other rooms to see what it looked like against a more neutral background and felt it looked a little better. 11 years agoHi! Love your idea of ”Traditional in a Mod World”. Just to throw a completely different idea into the mix, these are dupioni silk panels (lined) with wood hardware. They add a soft, elegant touch but are simple. I sourced them from PB, very cost efficient and they seem to often be on sale.

11 years agoHI! The rod would hang straight across the window bank, above the arch. It would not follow the vaulted ceiling line. Here is a photo of a square top transom with the rod hanging above it.
I hope that you can get the idea. The 2" diameter rod it to weight the treatments being that the treatments are hung so high. The fabric in these photos are definitely not the fabrics that would be used for your application, but both of these are on 2" diameter rods.

11 years agoInsideOut ... Thx! The pic with the gold drapes is awesome!! I checked out PB online options. Prices are great ($119.00 – $189.00 SPECIAL $101.00 – $160.00). I liked the gray and also the gold. Gonna stop by physical store today to see if they have samples. Now I have to search for a roman shade with a look similar to the softness and sheen of the drape. The ones online at PB are way to heavy and cotton-y. But I'll ask at the store. I so appreciate everyone on this discussion.

11 years agoHi N, way back 26 hours ago when I threw in the mix drapery panels, I must admit that I pictured them on all windows and doors. Especially when I look at your living/dining area, I could see a wall of drapes at nighttime perfectly matching your style which I call "Traditional in a Mod World". Of course we all have personal preferences and it is just mine to have the drapes matching instead of drapes and roman shades adjacent. I hope nobody minds my expressing this different view. Thanks!
