Need help with a red carpet

My style is contemporary and I'm moving to a home that I'm very excited about. As much as I love this house I'm very frustrated with the family room/TV room. As you can see in the picture the red carpet is very challenging to work with a contemporary look. This room is very big 31x34. I have no idea what to do with it, don't even know what color to paint the walls. By the way the furniture in the picture are from the previous owner, I will be buying new furniture. Any suggestions? I'm attaching the picture. Help!!!!

    what is under the carpet? I think stained and polished concrete would be great. Also, you will be able to use contemporary area rugs/animal print? to "divide" the room using rugs to define each spaces purpose.

    Darzy, I don't know what's under but I'm pretty sure is not concrete unfortunately as is in the send floor. I really cant afford the change the carpet since this is such a big space, I need to try to make it work. I think I need to start by painting the wall but I have no idea on this one..lol

    It almost looks like casino carpet, doesn't it? But I'll bet it hides a lot of dirt. For the wall color I would find paint to match the lighter (off white?) color in the carpet. Using the same color, paint the crown molding but in a glossy paint, also the baseboards. Other than that, maybe you could find a REALLY large area rug at a good price.

    Hi Tanay 1020, is it in the budget to change the flooring in this room? Not the easiest carpet to work around .I would like more info if possible..is this room in a basement? i see a table in this room but guessing that it's not attached to a kitchen??Are you keeping the pool table?
    Acid washed concrete is very nice however, it can be cold unless you have infloor radiant heat..
    The possibilities are endless in this room as it is very large..You can certainly do alot here..
    Engineered hardwood can be installed on concrete floors plus it will go nicely with your wood crown..
    You could do a few flooring surfaces in this room, have carpet in the TV watching area and add some separation to the room..

    I wonder if it's possible to dye the carpet, in place? If this can be done you may get quite a few more years use out of it and it won't be so difficult to decorate around. I'm thinking something dark, like dark chocolate brown, or possibly black.

    Great idea to create separate areas. Have you considered wallpaper? There are some great grasscloths with metallics for reflection or even cork wallpaper. That would alleviate what color to select for the wall and take the focus off the carpet.

    Shelley, Changing the carpet is not in the budget unfortunately. This room is on the second floor of the house, is not connected to any other area, it has a door just like a bed room. To the right of the room which you cant see in the picture there's a built in desk with some cabinets kind of like a desk/ wetbar. We are keeping the pool table but not the rest of the furniture. I would like to use this room as a TV room/game room for the family to hang out. But every time I look at the red carpet all my ideas get blocked. I know I want to paint the wall, I have no clue what color would look good with the red carpet. thank you so much for your help!

    okay. If not in the budget to change the carpet I think to update the space would be a fresh new wall color. I like Bobbi's idea of off white walls..especially for the trim. But, how about something a bit more fun and embrace the carpet color...like a bright teal. This is tricky tho because the shade needs to complement the carpet color. It may take a few paint samples to get just right. How does the blue/green of the pool table felt look with the carpet in person? Then, floor to ceiling off white curtains, and a HUGE off white leather U sectional, accent chairs..then pops of color in graphic toss pillows.

    How about a very deep eggplant on the walls or at least the tv wall. Paint the crown molding and the baseboards the same color as the walls. Replace the fans and lights with contemporary stainless or brushed nickel fixtures. Use large 10x13 jute, sisal or Berber rug in the tv area. Hang a very large music or movie poster, or artwork on wall adjacent to the tv wall near the drums. Buy a large sectional for the tv area. Good luck!

    Tan Walls would go well with the red textured carpet. Create a sitting area and other areas in the room, eating, etc. Good Luck

    Are you opposed to wall covering, I would love to see a natural woven camel covering! If you do leather sofa, a rich camel or whiskey leather. Philip Jeffries attached! Good luck looks like a great space.

    Shelley, I love your comments and pictures. I purchased a dark brown leather sofa, very similar or almost the same shape as the one in your picture which I think would look great with the white chair in your picture. My husband mentioned he would to add a comfortable chair or recliner for him. What do you recommend? In regards to the area rugs, should I get one big rug and put it between the sofa And the tv? and if I decide to get a table with chairs I should get another rug?

    You are welcome, I love the idea of the dark leather sofa like Shelly's attached sofa. Maybe a comfortable english style club chair for you husband with an ottoman instead of a recliner that may compliment Shelly's style furniture she suggested. Then bring in some navy accents, linen etc. Have fun!

    Thank you tanay 1020, I would get a nice comfortable chair for your husband..try and convince him that a chair and ottoman is the best choice..maybe you should try and coordinate a leather comfy chair for him and keep the white chair for yourself. ;)
    As for the area rugs the bigger the better..keep them simple, no pattern, I am not one to be trendy however, I love the new shag..That will help eliminate the look of your carpet..it is the texture of the shag that will do the trick..yes get an area rug for under any table that you may want to add to this space again something totally neutral..Replace the fans with something cool like the fixture I have attached. Good Luck..You can always send us Houzzer's a picture of the finished product..

    Ok - currently saving money on carpet; already have pool table and lamp for this area.

    What about creating different seating areas in the room. You said there are built ins? Computer station? Family using this space.

    Here is MY suggestion: I would use MORE than one rug - each for specific areas of this room.
    You can have the sisal berbers made to fit - and I think ONE large one would actually end up being a little messy as this would be huge - and could get off bounds? (out of shape)

    You could have these bound and use them to create different areas within the larger space?

    Is that a gold or a taupe or beige color between the red pattern? Here is my suggestion : the opposite side of the color wheel tones down the other - since this is a red color - how about using a very soft BLUE/GREY on the ceiling? Or a very soft Grey/Blue? And a very soft taupe or mocha color on the walls - something which is within the SAME tonal family as the NON-red portion of your rug? This should go nicely with your brown sofa and the sisal or other type berbers?

    YES - get one larger one (RUG for the area in front of the TV . . . large enough to go from the baseboard area - to completely under your sofa?

    BTW - LAZYBOY makes beuatiful furniture - and you do NOT have to get the plumped and rolled ubiquitious leather chair. OR, I can personally, highly recommend FurnitureLa South, in Hickory N.C. - and they will deliver for FREE! Love that! They have a style for everyone and this is where they actually make the furniture. They sell ALL manufacturers at cost. Well not Lane or Ethan Allen.

    My one last thought - since this is such a very large space - I would also get a rather substantial and DARK drapery rod using finials - and extend the width of the drapes to help balance the room on the other side with the windows. Since you have built ins on the other side - this will help balance the space visually. IF you do not like the color of the fixture material on the pool table light - you can get any finish you desire in a rustoleium paint - I would consider spray painting this something in the neighborhood of a oil rubbed bronze; or something with more of a dark patina? This would also help balance out the room and bring focus into the space you are utilizing - the rest will fade away.

    SO - ceiling paint a must;
    paint the trim or add a more traditional trim - at least 5 inches in depth;
    TWO separate rugs - not one big one - at least one for now for the TV area;
    Extend your drapes and raise them almost to the ceiling to help balance the room;
    Darker drape rod - and double the fabric for your drapes to make them look fuller;
    Spray paint a darker finish on to the pool table fixture.
    Use a tone of paint on the wall which will go with the tone of the other color of your rug!

    Another thought: You consider finding an old wooden bench - or church pew ??? that would be fun; you could place facing into the space around the pool table area? This will give folks a place to sit and could help further define your separate areas?

    Take a look at Sherwin Williams Windsor Beige with your red rug. Although the inspiration photo is a bedroom you get the idea of how the warm neutral looks with a red rug. This is a massive room that will require correctly scaled furnishings to keep it from looking like a basement rec room. A free standing bookshelf used as a room divider would help to define the overall space. I also like the idea from previous posters to use a neutral or sisal rug in the TV area to break up the sea of red flooring. Are the rectangular lights florescent or skylights?

    Warm tan/gold walls, a rich brown color for seating. Create separate seating for television viewing, try hanging a couple ceiling mounted drapery panels with tie backs for space separation. Another area for game playing, reading & perhaps a refreshment wet bar area with a pub table.
