A contemporary garden for a family in South London. The planting is naturalistic and wildlife friendly, softening the sharp geometry employed in the hard landscaping. Seen here in summer with the echinacea, echinops and kniphofia in full bloom.

A view after leaving the dining area and headed to the ADU. I think about the experience through a space when designing it. Each vignette is so important so that while in one space and area, the view is to another interesting space. My intention is to lead you through the garden to be in it and investigate. Functional gardens are the most important to me so that my clients can extend their living space and be outside in the healing outdoors.

A small courtyard that packs a lot of punch for its size. Part of the view from the main open plan living//kitchen/meals area, it shines bright at night with creative garden lighting design.

Transformation of a typical Wellington backyard from a bare grass slope to a low maintenance and very functional space. x3 retaining walls have been constructed to terrace the site out and maximize space on the sloped section. The owners are keen gardeners and now are delighted to have high yielding vegetable gardens that are accessible (also to elderly) Remaining gardens are planted out with New Zealand Natives and a native tree was successfully transplanted onsite. Pathways have been finished predominantly with compacted aggregate to keep cost down yet maintain a very solid and skid resistant surface. Paving stones have been laid under a re-positioned existing washing line which leads onto over-sized stairs up to an existing Gazebo. The main access to the house has been upgraded with a new staircase that spirals through the trees up to the street above with a single sided handrail.

This TriBeCa rooftop garden was not very inviting when we first laid eyes on its black tar surface and neglected planters. Our makeover redesign included brown bamboo fencing, artificial turf, custom bench seating, outdoor rugs, and lush new plantings. The planters are a mix of ceramic and fiberglass pots. Plantings include maiden grasses, a hydrangea tree, a purple smoke bush, purple coneflowers, and yellow thread-leaf coreopsis. Artificial turf has come a long way and is now available in very high quality versions like this that mimic real grass perfectly. It’s also easy to clean with a hose, a scrub brush, and an outdoor vacuum cleaner. See more of our projects at www.amberfreda.com.

Concrete slab and deck sections create a path to the front door in a sea of decorative pebbles. This is all about the design and very limited water and maintenance needed. Photo by Ketti Kupper

The importance of having multiple seating areas, both indoors and outdoors, is often undervalued, yet always appreciated by visitors. This floating bench is made out of knotty alder and is the perfect spot to view a competitive game of bocce ball.

During excavation for this new modern home, large granite boulders rose to the surface from the primordial hillside. Instead of displacing these monoliths from the site from which they were created, they were arranged to define space. A circle of boulders stand guard around a custom built fire pit, providing protection from the wind while offering a place to climb or sit. The extended landscape view from the lawn is kept intact by the introduction of a ha-ha, a traditional landscape feature, that hides the productive garden and keeps it from breaking the view. Native and drought tolerant plantings hug the outer edges of the property for minimal use of irrigation and to visually blend into the surrounding hillside. This project also features a custom ipe bench with integrated lighting, waterjet address numbers with night lighting, and hardscape that complements the form and materiality of the architecture to create a harmonious transition into the horizontal plane. With amazing city views, its hard not to want to spend all your time living outside. With this design, you can. In one corner you have planters packed with seasonal vegetables that can be picked, rinsed and served, all within about 10 footsteps. Want some protein with that? No problem. The outdoor kitchen is set to feed a crowd, all while engaging friends over the bar, and into the dining area. Here, with built-in retractable pergola canopies, you can control your environment to whatever shade, sun, or night sky setting you desire. And then, when you can eat no more, kick-back and relax in the comfy, heated lounge seating area.
