In Seattle's Fremont neighborhood SCJ Studio designed a new landscape to surround and set off a contemporary home by Coates Design Architects. The narrow spaces around the tall home needed structure and organization, and a thoughtful approach to layout and space programming. A concrete patio was installed with a Paloform Bento gas fire feature surrounded by lush, northwest planting. A horizontal board cedar fence provides privacy from the street and creates the cozy feeling of an outdoor room among the trees. LED low-voltage lighting by Kichler Lighting adds night-time warmth . This garden was designed to marry the natural with the modern. Slate walling was used to create a unique sunken seating area with bespoke bee mosaics inlaid into the floor Industrial Corten-steel water features were used to add a contemporary edge. This mix of styles is also reflected in the planting. Large swathes of Wildflower Turf blend into a contemporary cottage/prairie planting scheme to create a striking, yet low maintenance garden. The specific slate walling was chosen for its orange hues and this colour is picked up through the Corten features and the perennial planting.
