We transformed this barely used Sunroom into a fully functional home office because ...well, Covid. We opted for a dark and dramatic wall and ceiling color, BM Black Beauty, after learning about the homeowners love for all things equestrian. This moody color envelopes the space and we added texture with wood elements and brushed brass accents to shine against the black backdrop.

Originally built in 1955, this modest penthouse apartment typified the small, separated living spaces of its era. The design challenge was how to create a home that reflected contemporary taste and the client’s desire for an environment rich in materials and textures. The keys to updating the space were threefold: break down the existing divisions between rooms; emphasize the connection to the adjoining 850-square-foot terrace; and establish an overarching visual harmony for the home through the use of simple, elegant materials. The renovation preserves and enhances the home’s mid-century roots while bringing the design into the 21st century—appropriate given the apartment’s location just a few blocks from the fairgrounds of the 1962 World’s Fair.

This cozy reading space dramatically changed when the cabinetry was stained a dark ebony from a light beech color. It instantly became the perfect spot to curl up and read a book with a beautiful view to the outside. A cow hide rug under some soft velvet chairs mixed with the warm dark walls create the perfect sanctuary. Erika Barczak, By Design Interiors Inc. Location: Denver, CO, USA THE CHALLENGE: Transform an outdated, uninspired condo into a unique, forward thinking home, while dealing with a limited capacity to remodel due to the buildings’ high-rise architectural restrictions. THE SOLUTION: Warm wood clad walls were added throughout the home, creating architectural interest, as well as a sense of unity. Soft, textured furnishing was selected to elevate the home’s sophistication, while attention to layout and detail ensures its functionality. Dado Interior Design DAVID LAUER PHOTOGRAPHY
