I sold that earlier in the year but I believe it was 32 x 45 x 17 high. The price was $950.

What a unique space. I love that this isn't necessarily symmetrical. This can sometimes pose a challenge however when trying to unify a space. I would approach this dilema by addressing it with color rather than objects. Try painting inside of the bookcase shelves and the alcove a contrast color. This will allow the walls to recede and the fireplace to come forward adding depth and dimension. Here are a couple of color suggestions based on your existing furniture. C:\Users\patron\Desktop\COLOURlovers_com_daisy_101.svg Also if you place a decorative rod and scarf on the window behind the sofa that would take away from the attention going towards this space and eliminate the perception that something needs to be placed there. Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

That's a working fireplace isn't it? I agree that the fire surround is probably not in keeping with your tastes and would probably look perfectly at home in a rustic country cottage, but just not for you. There are several options open to you, and if your a bit handy with the DIY, none of them need to cost much, it's just a little hard work. Remove the fire surround and see what dimensions you have with the actual fireplace, it might be that you can also remove the iron plate around it, thus leaving you with a much smaller actual fire. However, be aware that it will affect, the plaster, the skirting and the hearth, as everything is currently built to home the fire surround. You could go............at that point for making good the walls and keep it simple by having a floating shelf only, or another fire surround that's simpler. Loads on Ebay! Just make sure they're suitable for a working fire!
