We are in the process of getting our extension complete, the old kitchen can be utility and the new extension part will be the new kitchen. The new kitchen space is 4.2m wall space and looking at a L shape.
The main wall has been moved to give us more kitchen space and this reduce the utility space
The Utility space is 2m x 2.1m, main thing is can we fit an island and squeeze in a walk in larder anywhere?
Also the entrance to the utility from the kitchen area can be modified, and second entrance from the hallway to the utility can also be blocked off.

Where is the door to the kitchen and where are windows? Assuming the kitchen is c2.65m wide it wont fit an island. Can you not have tall storage in the utility to use as a larder?

I have uploaded another layout which gives the full picture, the window position can be moved and is on the wall facing the garden, part of the new extension. Having the larder in the utility is also an option

I deal with a lot of laundry too, especially at times when the kids will bring me a weeks worth of clothing. Where I am we pay electricity at different rates depending on the time of day so if I don't keep it somewhat organized it will start to overflow because weekdays I can only do loads in the evening to save $. One thing I did was to install cabinets with doors above the washer and dryers. I just re-used ones from our kitchen tear out, but you can usually get second hand ones fairly cheap if you are on a budget. This keeps all our laundry washing/dryer needs tucked away. We also have extra batteries and lights stored in there and our first aid and medication in the other cupboard for us and our livestock. We also have a laundry sorter for darks/whites/linens. It looks like you already have a great set up for that with your bins. Not sure how old your kids were, but they can start at a pretty young age at putting clothing in drawers if label the drawers with pictures. I think my kids were about 5 when they started doing it. It wasn't perfect of course, but they would have to put them in the drawers after I folded the clothes. It helps if you don't have clothes that need hanging. My one teenage son still gets all his clothes in drawers because they never seemed to make it on hangers in the closet. I would designate a folding area for the counter above the appliances and the counter above the cabinet as where folded clothes stay until their owner puts them away. I'd also maybe put some hooks or a rod above your laundry sorter. This would allow you to have clothes that are hung put on the hangers until they are put away.

I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. Kitchen is actually not a bad size, considering that you have the dining room and that it is the size of some modern kitchen diners. I think some of your cabinets are retro in a good way, maybe not the three quarter height one but the uppers and sliders under the sink are interesting. Could you see them in 50s retro mint green with olive walls or say duck egg blue units and walls and hints of pink or red here and there in the kitchen? You could have them resurfaced by an auto paint company in any colour you like. At the very least don't rip them out and skip them, somebody will love them, they are very in in certain circles.

How is the open space to be used?

You could lose the 3 units under the window and have an island against the window wall rather than floating. It also means you lose that awkward corner unit so you can have tall units either end of the main run. Put your sink, DW and bin in the island

I think an island could work, but I'd focus on keeping the space practical. Adjusting a doorway might create room for a pantry-style larder without making the kitchen feel cramped.

How would a peninsula kitchen sound? This could allow for a hidden door to the utility space and creates more space

I was thinking gallery kitchen also but dont like the idea of having a sink on the island, we would want the sink facing the garden window ideally

I think it is a good idea to have a bit more than just the kitchen modelled as it sounds like you are changing the layout of the home.

Personally I think it is a good idea to have what leads in to the space modelled as well, you can then effectively walk through and get a better feel for it.

Try not to write anything off in design and focus on perhaps gathering images of lighting, other spaces not kitchens you like anything that visually appeals can help a designer focus on your tastes as a pose to just putting units in a room.

We have currently designed a downstairs cloakroom to someone specific tastes and included all the paint and wallpaper as part of the work after understanding their preferences.

A good designer should be able to not just finalise the layout but the whole overall feel of the room and be able to show you how the units look without the doors, so that you can make sure that it meets your storage needs.
