Replacing front door and painting rosewood pvc windows

Hi All, I’m looking for some inspiration for a facelift on the front of the house.
We are goi g to replace our front door, closing the colour of the door would be limiting due to the colour of the windows, also not sure if I like the rosewood / mahogany windows. Can you please advise on the colour that would compliment the colour of the bricks, and also if u can share experiences of painting such windows. As I have no idea at all. Thank you in advance x

That brickwork is a tricky colour to work with. I would go for something quite light like a light grey. I almost think black or very dark grey could work too. Be careful with green as you don't want any colour with yellow undertones. Have any of your neighbours painted theirs a different colour just to get an idea?

Your right the brick work does make it a bit tricky. Most of them still have the mahogany but each house has different bricks, so really can’t use those for inspiration. Here a better pic

Hello egreevy, Okay, yes I see, it's a difficulty but maybe not impossible... Just whether you want to try to find out more about this.. Taking windows out to paint is a bigger job but it may still be possible.. ... So for the immediate.. Paint the front door (just the door) it might give a nice finish to have the side windows white.. Then you have a bit of contrast like your image above.. and add window boxes with lovely foliage or buxus.. it will work with the green you already have... I couldn't see as my screen was dimmed.. I think leaving all the ivy colour you have at present would be really nice.. (hence my suggestion of more green!! Also I wouldn't paint the pebble dash, to me it looks absolutely fine on the house itself.. Maybe the small boundary wall at the front and a bit of the garage.. Also a flat box hedge coming over the top of the boundary wall could be nice too.. It will be lovely and green.. : ) )

I think it might work better to have blinds on the wall with the smaller windows (perhaps in a plain colour) and have curtains on the main stretch of windows, using the existing curtains to replace the small roman blinds. This would allow the fantastic view to be the main focus. I do think plain curtains would work well here but you perhaps aren't keen to change them as they are new? Could they be used elsewhere? I also agree re moving the sofas so they aren't at angles, it looks a bit strange. Maybe try them in a u shape around the fire. And perhaps painting the door frame white might make the room feel calmer. Where did you find your lovely footstool btw?

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! Thanks a lot for the tip re dimensions for a piece of art over the sofa and a coffee table, both of which are on my list to get, I would’ve had no clue re this and it’s fantastic to discover that there are certain rules which, if you apply them, can make your room work visually! Thanks again for the brilliant advice, I really appreciate it.

Agreed that terracotta tiling clashes with the brickwork. Get some paint colour charts to start with and see what colours look good against your brickwork.

I think by the time you’ve paid someone to do a decent job of painting the windows, you might end up wishing you’d got new ones; with the lead diamonds they might still look a bit dated. Ask around for a reputable windows company - we got a few quotes and interest free credit. Then, when budget allows, get the rest of the house done. Get a front door to match, paint the facias and get a stylish new porch - that will cheer you up every time you pull up outside your home! 😊

The window frames to be lighter. Mahogany windows were very fashionable in the 1980s, although I personally never liked them. The diamond leaded glass looks fab on a very old Tudor building, but doesn’t suit more modern buildings. If budget allows I would replace them all with plain glass. Painting them is quite a painstaking job and not much fun. I painted my original wooden windows when we moved in and within 2 years it was already flaking. Personally I would go for simple white on the windows and then whatever colour you like that sits well with the brickwork, maybe a soft green or blue, nothing too dark as the porch area could look a bit too dark? Paint the garage the same colour. Here’s some door colours, but I’m having a new front door and I drove town looking at everyone’s doors for ideas.
