Need help for my Living Rooom
Looking for advice from anyone with a good eye for interior design. All comments & critique on current decor welcome. .it's a small room (i used a wide angle lens)
My areas of concern:
(A) what to do with the blank area over the sofa?
(B) should I replace the sofa with a light coloured low profile one/other?
(C) I need more seating. Adding a chair on either side of a small table in front of the window, will obstruct the door and the tv area...I think a storage bench up to window sill level instead?
(D) will a white/cream rug work? or impractical??
(E) the Fireplace, was thinking of tiling the black area with terracotta tile (same ones as the floor tiles) or painting the black areas white/cream/sand? in order to visually recess the fireplace a bit. Wondering if you can paint the inside of the fireplace, behind the coals, a sand colour?

Comments (37)Hello CG, you can buy some of these and try them on site. From the pictures you posted I get the feeling you have 2 colors with similar saturation both fighting for attention. It's a little too much. I would keep the green but go softer on the red (i.e rust). You can also let yourself be inspired by the grey/silver/bordeaux floral and stripe pillows to create a brand new color scheme using these colors instead. For example, a very soft gray on the walls, gray carpet, grey/bordeaux combo in the curtains and for the sofa accents, pillows similar to these 2. It's decision time. I am getting ready to refit my kitchen so may need some help.i am thinking of a grey coloured farrow and ball colour on the bottom cabinets and white on the top. , I do like that kind of furniture, but it is more ornate than anything we have, trying to keep my furniture to a minimum, simple functional. The wall behind the sofa from cornor to door is 2.70meters. My other half loves to lie out on the sofa so he wont allow me to replace with chairs.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoInstall sliding doors to cover the opening with the music system, and mount TV on an articulated arm or a swivel base so it can be adjusted for better viewing. Do you have room for placing a sofa perpendicular to the fireplace, facing the window and TV end of the room? Here's a great link to explore:

8 years agoI like that bench. Remember a lot of what I post may not be available in Ireland; just for the concept. Is that a built-in valance at your window? For more light and more open feeling you might remove it. If you need privacy, look into a top down bottom up blind. I wouldn't want to look out on the car park all the time. How about spanning the rad wall with a slim rad cover, or even a deeper one to serve as a surface you can style with decor? I suggested sliding doors to cover the stereo equipment, but regular doors might make it more accessible. If you're keeping a sofa on that wall, look for a Scandinavian style one in a light color and get a great piece of art to hang above it. Art can be up to 75% of the sofa's width. If you want a coffee table it should be 1/3 - 1/2 of the length between the sofa's arms.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI think a nice tile, similar to this would look beautiful on your fireplace and in your space.
Also, to break up that (gorgeous) terra-cotta tile, I do think you need a light/cream wool rug. Don't be intimidated with the light color. I have had a white/light rug (with a toddler) for over a year and it looks great. Granted it's not as crisp as it used to be but nothing stands out as being dirty.
Love the bench you suggested for under the window as additional understated seating.
A question for you regarding the music system: Do you need something so large or will an iPod doc with speakers suffice? It seems like a bit of an eye sore and draws my attention to it.
For above the couch, I'd begin the hunt for a large piece of artwork that speaks to you. You have nice taste and I think a piece that speaks to that could be truly stunning.
I don't thing you *have to* change your couch but love the light grey couches suggested in the comments above.
(**Also, please don't put the tv above the fireplace like suggested from others --your space is too gorgeous. If it is difficult to view from the couch, place the tv on a mounted arm to adjust while viewing.)
