Dado rail and paint colour confusion!

Hi there,

Looking for some paint ideas please! We have a dado rail half way up in our hallway, with Dulux timeless on the top half then we are planning on painting the bottom half a rich dark teal colour (blue puddle by valspar).

For the living room, I want the colours to flow. Again we have a dado rail half way up. What colours would you suggest? It is a good size room with lots of natural light flooding in.

I have my heart set on dark green velvet sofas too so trying to think of a colour that will pair well with that.

Do we just keep the walls neutral with the bold sofa adding colour? I’m just stumped as the dado rail makes me think there needs to be two tone walls??

Its perfectly possible to ignore a dado rail. Its not some command to use two tone everywhere. I think its easier if you are going to use two colours to use the same shade or similar in different strengths. Teal is very dominant. You may grow tired of it and then you have matched expensive sofas to suit. Do a lot more research on this. More images. Try and view the rooms as a whole and not individually or you risk a dolls house effect. Consider sightlines too.

Thanks! I don’t want to shy away from colour but with going bold in the hallway we should probably keep the wall colours in other rooms fairly neutral / muted?

I think I made a mistake- I have painted the railing and trim of the stairs in brilliant white - high gloss while doors to dining/living room in eggshell off-white (color grand - almost white). A runner will go up the stairs... (the runner is off white - beige color). Is there a way or would you recommend to change the color of the stairs and trim and dado rail to same color as dining/living room doors and trim around them?

I wish I could help but I have exactly the same problem! I hope someone comes along and gives you some great advice. Mine's long and narrow with a small L shape at the end. Only light is through the front door, it's even been painted in the same colour scheme as yours and even though it faces south, still looked gloomy. In 15 years I've never once been happy with it! I did paint my dado white if that helps.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Hi Marie. It's difficult to tell how wide the room is but a round table could work at the foot of the stairs. Dress with a large bowl and plants/flowers etc. you could also try hanging 3 chandeliers or pendants down the hall. I would also have either 2 matching consoles opposite each other by the front door or keep your existing and add some seating opposite to create symmetry. I think if you were to dress the console with bigger items it would stand out more ie ginger jars on the bottom shelf, classic urns, plants etc on the top. Once you've got the basics done and budget permits, you can add further floor standing decorative pieces, a small chair etc. I think you definitely need some tall art by the front door though or even mirrors if you're not keen to add art

If you posted a few pics it would enable us to give you far better advice. Its difficult when you cannot really imagine what it looks like. You must have what you like and will make your home a lovely place. There are some very clever people commenting on here.

It’s a blank canvas at the moment as we’ve just recently moved in!

@sonia is your dado rail the same colour as what’s on the walls or is it different?

Hi Farel, dado rail is white and the walls are a pale grey. I did have bottom bit in a dark green but I just didn’t like it.

The teal is nice but it is quite strong. Another option would be to add a sage or olive below the dado in the hall which would work well with timeless. For the living room you could consider adding DIY panelling above the dado and painting all the same colour (ignore the colour in the 2nd pic), it’s quite cheap to do?
