To panel or not?

I am thinking of adding panelling to our entrance hallway. Do you think it would work? Also is it a very big job? I presume we would have to continue it upstairs too. Thanks.

In my opinion: no to panels, but yes to crown moldings. :)

We panelled our hallway. It is nowhere near as nice or a spacious as yours though. We are delighted with with outcome. We chose plain white panels, continuing along the stairs and the landing, and above the handrail we wallpapered in a putty colour damask. I like it. There is very little light in this area and it sure makes the best of what little we had to go on. Of course, I had to put my glam hat on and hang a chandelier.

Wall panelling looks wrong

We've done some wall panelling along the stairs and for some reason it doesn't work the way I planned it. It makes hallway look cluttered, and sort of "jump" right on you when you come in, as this is the first thing you see in the house (photos are taken from the entrance). It's not painted yet ( just primed), and probably will look slightly better when all painted the same colour, but still feels wrong. I wonder, is it because the squares are too small? Boards too thick? Should I leave wider space between vertical boards? Any ideas how to make it look better? All advices are highly appreciated. Thanks.

So we're working on a project to install solar panels in our home. From talking with friends, not many of them actually have them installed in their homes. What do you think are the biggest obstacles to installing Solar Panels? P.S. I would be very happy to talk with anybody with solar panels already installed. Flooring for a home office that is all wood paneling and cabinets

I want to remove carpet and put in new flooring, NOT carpet. With all the wood on the walls, I think a wood floor is too much wood and too dark. What would you suggest for tile to lighten up the room with heavy wood?

Hi Marie. What is the rest of the house like as the front door looks contemporary? Were you intending to panel floor to ceiling or just to dado height? Were you looking at White panelling and in what style?

Ya the rest of the house is a mix between contemporary and traditional. I was thinking of the half panels in white. Maybe i should just put down a rug and dress the walls with artwork instead. Thanks to all the replies.

I do love panelling but I'm not convinced it will marry with your front door or stairs, especially at half height. Maybe try some really big pieces of art either side of the front door. Given the double height of the ceiling you can hang them high. Some statement lights hanging down in this area would also look great, as would a sofa opposite the bottom of the stairs.

I agree with Minnie...don't break that super vertical ...big artwork would look dramatic and you have a super space to show it off. Make the most of the height.

I just panelled my hallway half way up with paper on top, it looks amazing. My house style is very New England/shabby chic to it goes very well. I think it may look a little lost in your hallway. LARGE artwork would look great and I think the Hemnes console is also way too small for the space, a big sideboard with a huge mirror above would make a great statement at the entrance with two lamps on ect.

For this house I think you have to draw the eye up not down. Think about a chandelier at the front door end tall art and personally I would try to find a circular table for the middle- try to get something that echos the wood of the stairs and then add statement flowers or a vase to give it height.

Thanks so much for all the comments, it is great to get the opinions of others. The table that is there at the moment is definitely too small so we will be changing that first thing, but maybe a round table in the centre would be nicer than a chest table against the wall? Sometimes looking at a thing for too long can be more confusing than helpful so it is great to have fresh eyes looking at it :)

Hi Marie. It's difficult to tell how wide the room is but a round table could work at the foot of the stairs. Dress with a large bowl and plants/flowers etc. you could also try hanging 3 chandeliers or pendants down the hall. I would also have either 2 matching consoles opposite each other by the front door or keep your existing and add some seating opposite to create symmetry. I think if you were to dress the console with bigger items it would stand out more ie ginger jars on the bottom shelf, classic urns, plants etc on the top. Once you've got the basics done and budget permits, you can add further floor standing decorative pieces, a small chair etc. I think you definitely need some tall art by the front door though or even mirrors if you're not keen to add art

Great doorway, I don't think panelling would suit, I would consider a larger chunkier sideboard with a very large case full of big bright coloured flowers & a huge mirror behind it, on the sides of the wall I would think about putting a gallery of all your family photos & make it homely & welcoming. Gallery would also put your own mark on it, you could choose gold or silver frames pending on type of mirror chosen.

Hi l think you can panel your hallway as your house is already mix design it will look nice!! To my advise it will look even nice if you panel with the same wood effect as your staircase the straight will drow your eyes down you wouldn't see the emptiness as well if put some paint with nice caving framed effect l think it should make the interesting!! Thanks

The floor finish and front door are quite contemporary plus the double height entrance hall could mean that the space would be divided with the panelling - which sort of defeats the object of having a double height space in the first place. If you opted for paneling within the single height space then this would also act as a division to the amazing sized halfway space. My opinion would be adding some crown mouldings to the ceilings then put a antique plaster/stone frieze above the door to add drama when people were leaving and add some big artwork to the large wall and a huge ornate mirror behind the hall stand. I'd even consider matching the right exactly to the left and having two hall stands, two lights, two mirrors/artwork behind each stand etc.
