I think the shelves are a good idea, quite budget friendly and you could use a contrasting material. I am assuming it is a fridge/freezer housing. Do you have a shallow cupboard above where the fridge/freezer would be. What colour and type of finish is it? It may also be possible to fit doors to the housing giving you a large full height storage cupboard.

There’s doors on the front but the unit is completely empty, I was wondering if I could buy a shelving unit to fit in. DIY isn’t really our thing unfortunately.

I'm sure you could buy a shelving unit. Look at the metal open chefs type as you can build it as high as you like. Ours are 800 wide and the shelves are about 400 deep. You can use them in the garage later. They come disassembled but it's really not hard to put them together.

The carcase will be 600mm wide. That’s standard. Get a carpenter or joiner to add some shelves inside for you. It’s an easy job.

If you can identify who manufactured the kitchen originally (try looking under the shelves and worktops) then you might be able to purchase some matching shelves for the unit. If the carcass has little holes then you might be able to push in shelf supports and put shelves in yourself.

I think we got ours from Homebase but Amazon has some too. They are very flexible and can be used anywhere so that when you renovate your kitchen you can just move it elsewhere or dismantle it and keep it for when you need it. If you have bespoke shelving made it will cost you a lot more and if this is just a temporary fix why pay more now? Carpenters and joiners are so expensive we never use them.
