Short term kitchen solution

We recently bought a new house and are moving next month. The new kitchen is smaller than our kitchen but we will do a kitchen/diner/lounge renovation in the future. We want to live in the house for a year first. The current owners are taking the American fridge freezer with them so we will bring our own standard sized fridge/freezer with us and remove the fridge surround. I'm thinking of other ways to improve the kitchen. I've love a bit more storage/prep space and counter seating area for 2. I'm going to get the cabinets painted and change the handles. I was also considering swapping the last 2 cupboards marked M in the first photo with our new fridge and putting the cupboards where the American fridge is. And then adding a peninsular unit beside these cupboards. Does that make sense? I'd need to get a new worktop though so not sure about costs. I'd love some thoughts on this and some colour suggestions please. Any other ideas welcome too.

Congratulations on your new home. It’s a great idea to live in the house before doing a renovation as you will get to understand what changes you need. We did this and had a similar dilemma. We added an ikea island unit to assist with the limited counter top space. I think you should put your fridge where the current one is. Live with the kitchen as is if you are planning to change in a years time as every penny you spend now, you will wish you had when you renovate.

Thanks for the reply. You have a good point about saving for the renovation. My original idea was just to put our fridge where the current one is and take out the big surround and get a (cheap) island with seating (I have counter stools from my current island) and push it against the wall (but parallel to the range cooker) That's probably a cheaper option. The kitchen is only 3.3 x 2.75 wide so not big enough for an island in the middle. My mind is in overdrive redecorating this house!!

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

We had a very similar space and had moved from a house with a much better kitchen in terms of scale and layout so it took a little getting used to. It’s worthwhile waiting though. Best of luck with the move.
