Renovating Design Dilemma Exteriors

How do I modernise the front of my 1960s bungalow

Hi,

We will be renovating our bungalow (just a single storey at the back and a small one on the side). We will be changing the windows, but how else can we modernise the front to stop it looking quite so.. well, 1960s. I do hate the bow windows (Id much prefer the angle of a bay window but probably not worth the expense).

Any idea would be really appreciated!

Personally I like it. And I think it looks 1930s

It really depends on your budget. Fresh paint, new windows and some beautiful large trees in pots would help a great deal. You could clad the top section, I like the brick so would not paint it. Another alternative would be to modernise it completely. Grey aluminium windows in a modern style and a darker colour over the cream. Dark grey is a good foil for red brick. Alternatively you could render the brickwork and paint the whole exterior a better colour. I think losing those net curtains would help as a start. Think about plantation shutters maybe or frosted glass if you need privacy.

Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Sorry, but I don't care for the bookcase idea in an entrance. I also noticed the masks you have, and think it would be great to decorate the space using them as inspiration. Here is a photo to show you the kind of rug I think would work here.

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. I like it too! I wouldn’t be doing more than taking down the net curtains, moving the bins, and planning a lovely planting scheme for the front garden…

I personally think it’s very attractive in 1930’s style. The light from the 5 angled panes is quite lovely so agree you should remove the net curtains.

The best you can do is tidy up the front garden. Move the bins or get a bin storage unit. Add some nice planting and paint the render. It’s a really cute house.

Replacing the windows is definitely a good start. A sleek, modern window design can change the whole look.

Simplified, clean lines in the greenery can bring a contemporary feel. Think about geometric pathways or minimalist plant pots. Outdoor lighting also contributes significantly to the aesthetics - consider path lights or uplighting for trees to add drama.

I like it too. Definitely dont paint the brick or you might cause damp. i would tidy up the front garden and get some lovely plants.

Personally, it is beautiful and I cant understand why you purchased this home if you wish to destroy its history by destroying its external “look” and homogenising it? Purchase a property that is “modern” if that is what your style is….Leave well alone and move. These properties are historic and need people to own them and work sympathetically with them to retain their history not turn them into sterile, horrific and unsympathetic “estate” type lookie-likies.
