Bedroom with mansard roof - Advice needed
We bought a new barn conversion house but the mansard roof angles in the bedroom are really throwing me in terms of room design and colour!!
I am bringing our velvet dark blue bed with me but will start fresh with everything else. I’m aiming for a bold colour or wall paper print to give it a more contemporary and modern to contrast with the rustic vibe of the house
I’d love to hear some ideas on room layout and colour/wallpaper ideas.

Comments (9)Hi Louise, In a room like this I always like to keep the walls and ceilings ( including the small door and frame 1 colour...in this case a lavender. I'd start by finding colour chips that have the same colour as the carpet, and then go a few shades lighter but in the same tome. All baseboards and door to hall should be the same colour as the iron beds...off white. With the walls a colour you'll be able to see the pretty pattern of the frame. OR find a small scaled pattern of any of the shades of purple and the cream same as the bed frame) with the same fabric. Make custom bedding to match. In a small room 1 pattern works well everywhere. If you go the paint route, try to find fabric with soft gold, lavender, purple for a skirted table between the beds if there's room. You can put it on a cardboard table and base...found in some fabric or craft stores. Comments (4)Three bedrooms will always be worth more than 2. If there is enough headroom I would take loft stairs up above the main staircase - from the cupboard position. Leave a landing and corridor to the bathroom and partition off a tiny bedroom/nursery/study. A lot depends on which way your roof is pitched. I would get a few loft companies in to tell you what is possible within a limited budget. If and when you get the money it might be possible to close the existing back door and refigure the kitchen units to allow a lobby and door opening out toilet and use the toilet door as your back door. That looks like a lovely layout I really like the open plan but our driveway around the house will come from the left side so that's why we had thought of addiing the extension to the right. I'm sure we could use your idea on the right side and it would still throw in plenty of light. Regarding the rooms: the long room to the right is the current kitchen which is currently very dark and cold, the small room behind this is the utility, the two rooms to the left of this are a front living room and back lounge. Comments (8)I too, am wondering why you were refused velux windows? Here in Scotland you are not allowed to convert an attic room to "livable space" - that is any room, other than a store room, without an escape window of a certain size, velux or other, due to fire regulations. Not sure where you live - in the UK? and what your regs would be? Again, I don't think you are allowed to open up a kitchen ceiling due to fire regs, this would obviously be a real danger in case of fire, when it would sweep upwards very quickly if a section was open. You obviously need to consult a surveyor or building engineer as a first step. If not done the right way, it can cause havoc when you come to sell, or even worse, if there ever were a fire....See More

4 months agoYou have quite a lot of odd angles to take into account with the window recessed and mansard roof. You say you would like wallpaper - have you considered it ALL over. This is a technique used quite often in attic spaces with awkward angles as it draws your eye to the pattern and away from the awkward angles. These may not be to your taste pattern wise but they give you the general idea - what do you think?

4 months agoI’m not that into wallpaper, it’s just a bit too fussy for me, but I know lots of people love it. I would go with a very simple look of white walls and ceiling, a lovely rug and grey or taupe furnishings. Similar to the picture below. I’m not sure how your blue bed would tie in with it, but I assume only the headboard will be seen?
