Ground floor reconfiguration ideas

Looking for some inspiration to reconfigure the ground floor layout of our house.
Currently have a lounge with 1970s glass screen/door into dining room, with serving hatch into kitchen, which has a door into a reasonable sized utility room. The utility room is on the side of the main house, with a door to the back garden and door to the walkway between garage and house, which has a side door into garage. The back of the garage has a ‘workshop’ area.

We have a young family, and so are thinking a kitchen/diner would be a nice alteration, possibly with changing some windows to give us access (French door/bifold) into garden.
However we are not sure we want an open plan kitchen/dinner/lounge.
We are not sure if we should just put a stud wall up between lounge/diner or something else (pocket doors) for flexibility.
The utility room is quite large.
The workshop isn’t really needed, as we already have a double garage.
We are wondering about joining the workshop into the main house, to create another room. Perhaps shrinking the utility, to have that as a pass through room.
It would also be nice to have an access door into the garage itself, rather than having to go outside.
The corridor between the house/garage/utility door seems a bit like wasted space at the moment too.
Looking for ideas and inspiration about how better utilise the space…. Suggestions would be welcome!

Maybe you should move the utility into the workshop area of garage and then combine dining kitchen and utility into a lovely open plan kitchen diner that incorporates somewhere for the kids to play with your supervision. Close off existing lounge from kitchen so it becomes more of an adult space. You have quite a lot of space to work with so I would think about how you would want to use it on a day to day basis as a family and design it to suit you.

Actually neutral rooms are very classy :) And adding a hand-knotted New Zealand wool carpet such as the one I've pictured would add a lot of coziness and ground the space, while complementing your striped chair. Small accents of colour can be added in artwork and on new sofa cushions. The fireplace makes a bold statement in the room, which could be compromised by giving the walls equal weight with bold colour. I understand that this is your family room, where you will be relaxing at the end of a long day and watching television. Therefore a calm, relaxing (yes, neutral!) colour scheme will achieve that. The charcoal grey drapes I described above should have lining, and they will add to the warmth of the room at night so you're not looking at cold black glass that's reflecting the room back to you. The colour scheme you have now is actually very nice--it just needs punching up a little with additions such as I described.

Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Sorry, but I don't care for the bookcase idea in an entrance. I also noticed the masks you have, and think it would be great to decorate the space using them as inspiration. Here is a photo to show you the kind of rug I think would work here.

I have a ground floor balcony approx. 14' x 6'. 18" of wall with 27" of railing. Any ideas for coverage as it looks into a bedroom. Its a private development so I have to be careful what I put up. I need something tall though but not fencing.

We are in the process of buying this house and ive ideas of how to make it work best for our young family but it would be great to get some thoughts on my proposed layout. Any advice would be hugely appreciated. On the right we are thinking of making the drawing room smaller, adding a wall and creating a pantry which can be accessed through the utility room. On the left we are thinking of adding a wall to the dining room to make half the room an office and the rest of the space a boot room. The w/c is tiny and under the stairs with steps down so this needs to change. I was considering adding a w/c when you come in on the right of the door as the 'studio' is just dead space - pic attached. In the kitchen I'm also considering knocking the wall to the living room to make this more open plan and potentially doing a v small extension off the kitchen for a playroom that would lead out to the garden. My two boys are under three so I want the playroom to be as near the kitchen as possible. Excuse my very simplistic drawing - hopefully it explains what I'm trying to articulate. Would really love some thoughts

I like Jonathan’s design too. Can I just say I quite like the glass panelling with door well not that style of glass quite so much but if you could resite it and replace the glass with clear or ribbed I think it would be quite cool.

@chloeloves we had wondered about doing the kitchen into the utility to make a kitchen diner, but wondered if it was then odd to have a separate dining room next the kitchen/diner and next to the lounge. For example, then if we were to turn the dining room into a kids room it would be adjoining the adult lounge and noise would carry through… which while fine with them being young when they are older and into computer games might be a bit annoying!
