Fireplace solution
This fireplace needs fixed and I don't know what the solution is! I wanted a stone hearth protruding out from the wall however my husband says he can't make the bottom any lower and the step will have to stay. I need to find a way to make this look right because at the minute it's a complete eye sore!
This hearth protrudes out slightly further forward than the skirting board, around 2cm so if I was to build the bottom up slightly and take a new piece of skirting board right across the front, there would be a hole in the flooring along the front 🫣
Help!! All suggestions welcome x

3 years agoI think the problem is the hearth doesn’t come out far enough. Putting skirting board in front will look odd I feel. Here’s some examples of hearths. The first is mine (sandstone hearth) and the others are examples I found on Pinterest which I think explains what I mean.

Comments (56)The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Comments (55)Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Comments (9)I really like the second one, but if you really like the wood panels then suit up for creativity - you can easily have the best of both worlds. Clear your wall at home and put the wooden panels there, you can then install the mantel on the panels just like in the second picture. Comments (9)I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. 3 years agoI think it looks fine, just needs a clean and tidy. If it’s not getting a fire in it then the hearth isn’t needed. Here’s a couple of pics of ours. We had to remove the log burner when we changed the room into a kitchen as there wasn’t room for a protruding hearth. It is left in a similar manor to yours except mine has skirting in front.
