I would like your advice on how to update my kitchen. I live in an old edwardian house and I would now like to update the kitchen. The kitchen is straight in off the hallway with a stained glass door leading in. There is a small dining area and I am restricted here as there is a bay window and I have a round table in this area on the left hand side. On the right is a little office desk and an old stone fireplace which i feel is dated. Would like to paint this but would it work out ok. The room is divided by a wood beam. The kitchen is spacious but has not got an island area. Right hand side continuing on from fireplace has the frige and an old pine dresser that I would like to get rid of. On the left hand side, it starts with a bookshelf and then the presses. The ceiling is pine. There is too much pine and I was thinking of painting presses but cant decide on a colour. It is a bright room as you have a sklight as well as windows. Any suggestions welcome. I am attaching pictures. Thank you so much. Pauline.

Hello the days are brightening up by now and I'm sure the room is looking less drab for it. However I think furniture rearranging will work wonders. You seem to have nice low window sills: show them off. If the sofa goes to the left between window and built-in unit you'll have a view out to the garden and more light in the room. Equally: can you fit the piano between the radiator and the double doors? Again: more light through the window. Low sills are a god-send, and so many of us are stuck with high ones. The room will feel more spacious with a good view to outdoors. The armchairs then: one to the left of the fireplace and one between the other window and piano. TV then between the two windows. (No shine on the screen) Does that fit maybe? Or do you need all five seats facing the TV? I rather like those stripy cushions. Can you find a striped wallpaper in matching colors and with an irregular pattern repeat for your accent wall? if going with wood floors how about a sheepskin rug for each of your doggies? Black or white. One last detail. A lower table for your side lamps would be good: At sofa arm or seat height. Coffee table could work in corner between window and new sofa position. Btw: I liked the suggestion to replace the cupboard doors above the fish tank with full-height ones. In some kitchen shops you can find ready-painted, wooden, panel doors that might fit. It's a long shot but you could be lucky. It would brighten up the corner if you got a light colour.

Mixing antique brass and polished chrome in the dining room & kitchen

What I'm actually wondering though is about mixing the metals - so having the chandelier and lamps with the touch of silver - or would I be better to source antique brass lamps like I have in some other rooms in the house - I kind of wanted to feature quite a bit of glass, and generally the glass comes with chrome, but I'm not sure if it's too modern for the sideboard etc, and mores worried about the clash of metals, but something tells me it might be ok in this instance! I have chrome taps and rainfall shower head in new bathroom and kept with antique brass for the light fittings and door/press knobs. Also yes the room is small but that's not an issue - it is what it is and I'm fine with it!

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

I really like the kitchen cupboards! What is it that you want to do other than not having too much pine? Personally I'd paint the ceiling white, replace the splashback tiles with a pale colour and clear all clutter from the top of the units and worktop. I'm also not too keen on the decorative piece above the window, I'd take that down if it wasn't too much effort and put up a roman blind to bring in a touch of colour (duck egg blue or a pale bluey grey). It would be great to see a picture of the fireplace, I can just see it in the reflection from the windows and from what I can see I'd render/plaster it smooth and paint it in a feature colour, possibly a colour from the blind. If you wanted to go further you could paint the whole kitchen or replace the worktop, even changing the handles would give you a new look, it depends what your budget is or how much you want to change and what look you're after?

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

I agree with the others, the units and doors are rather lovely and look to be good quality too. I'd get a professional in to spray paint them - a nice mid or pale grey could look great.

Paint the ceiling white - a soft white like dulux chalky downs could be nice.

Remove the wooden pelmet above the window.

Replace backsplash tiles, get a few samples you like and put them in the space to see what works for you. Something traditional but pale and light would work well. Natural quartz/marble/stone tiles would be beautiful.

Without seeing the fireplace its hard to offer advice.

Can I ask what age/style the house is? It looks as though it got quite a traditional farmhouse feel?

Depending on what your preferences are for flooring materials I'd initially suggest large slate flagstones or another type of warmer coloured stone. If you're not so keen on tiles or feel like your feet will get to cold then I think a nice engineered wood - think pale whitewashed or bleached oak. That does depend a lot on what flooring is going on elsewhere in the house and if it would look right where they join.

I love the little black fireplace as it is but the brick chimney breast is a little overmuch visually. Plus the little alcove being offset would drive me crazy! I think minnie suggested getting it plaster-boarded which would be the simplest solution. Then just paint it either to blend in with everything else or alternatively pick up on a colour you like elsewhere and make it a feature. A dark teal could be nice?

thank you so much love the suggestion for the fireplace. The house is about 100 years old and it is a town house, semi d. It has some lovely features in it, like bay windows and stain glass doors, high ceilings and coving. Lovely old fireplaces in the living areas. This fireplace was put in when we built on the kitchen extension. The dining area floor is oak and i now think you are correct the flooring in the kitchen needs to be changed. Thank you all for your great suggestions.

I agree with a lot of the comments above. Paint or preferably replaster the ceiling to loose the wood. Get rid of the wooden piece above the window. New floor, new wall tiles. You could get the cupboards painted or could leave. Loose the alcove in the fireplace be good to get matching bricks just to brick it in.

I love the ideas suggested above, especially the photos posted by whirlligig! As a first step, have you thought about doing a good and drastic decluttering? You would be amazed how your kitchen would look without all the knick knacks!!!
