Help - first coat on, is it too dark?

This is the family room in my whole-house renovation. First coat is on and I'm afraid it's too dark. Floor going in is dark smoked oak. The skirting will be the same as the ceiling. Thoughts or ideas to make it work (or change it)?

Comments (7)I would pick my flooring first. Then I would paint the walls. Then have a look at the room and see how you like it before you paint the cupboards or the brick. Do it in steps because I think your brick could look quite nice and I like your cupboards the way they are. Just don't jump too fast painting things that you can't reverse. It may be that you will still want to paint the brick and cupboards but better to see how things look before you do. Comments (17)I understand what you want to do, so here's my suggestion, if it fits.....I'd move the couch under the mirror. Move table to the center of the kitchen, like an island. Sounds like it's two adults and two toddlers, so I'd definitely remove two of those chairs. Are your kids in high-chairs, if so move the other two chairs out too. Basically you want four chairs not six. Move them to a garage, basement or another room. Put the chairs around two or three sides of the table. I'd leave the side near the stove and washing machine(?) open. TV would mount to the right of the back door. See if that would work. Either way, it's going to be a tight space. Comments (3)Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Comments (12)I do love drainpipe grey but particularly love it with the contrast of white marble countertop and a white Belfast sink. With wooden countertops I love the blue greys and greys with a hint of green. Your kitchen is already looking gorgeous so maybe you'd prefer a lighter grey like Farrow and Ball French gray, lamp room gray or blue gray as the photos below. 10 years agoHi, the aspect of the room is actually south-west. The first photo shows the view towards the sliding doors while standing in the alcove (excuse the messy garden!). The room adjoins via folding doors, what will be the kitchen in a lighter warm grey - Hearthstone, again from Colortrend. Photos show a view from the darker room (family/tv room) looking into the kitchen and also from the kitchen looking back into the family room. The family room looks very dark in these....

10 years agoHi there, time has moved on and I thought I'd post up some 'after' pictures. Still a way to go for example, new sofas and a coffee table in the TV room and new table and chairs (some day!) but I am REALLY happy with the colour. My pride and joy for this room is the silestone worktop called Alpine White which works beautifully with the wall colour and floor (super rustic smoked oak). The wall colour was Hearthstone from Colour trend. Thanks all!
