lounge without chimney ?

Good evening.. we are about to move into our new home. The lounge is large space, 21’1 x 15’5 (6.42m x 4.70m) the room has a limestone fire surround housing a log effect gas fire. We will not be replacing this in the interim.

I am interested in ideas to give the room balance using the fireplace, my first thought it to use panelling perhaps incorporating new wall lights. If any one has any ideas they could please share or has photographs of a similar lounge I would greatly appreciate some inspiration. Many thank !

My old lounge was similar - we created a feature wall effect around the fireplace as it there was a chimney breast using masking tape.

Hi, I love Victorian houses especially ones with original features. Is there also a fireplace in the lounge? I don't necessarily think you need exactly the same on both rooms. I this if the flooring is the same then you can create two different moods. Like you say if one get more light and has a large bay window then you will automatically get a very different feel. I would say that out of the colours you mentioned I would be more inclined to go with the grey tones in the front room. These would tie in tonally with the navy in the dining room. I would also follow the same theme with woodwork and mouldings etc. Perhaps you could be brave and introduce a bright accent colour in the front room like a lovely bright yellow/mustard colour. This would add the warmth and work with the brighter aspect. You could include it on larger spaces such as a rug, cushions and blinds etc Hope this helps. Good luck with your move!

Thank you both for taking the time to comment. Yes it would be better without the doors but unfortunately the doors have to stay. Patricia's U-shaped idea is promising. I could use the outer two thirds of the 'conservatory' area as a 'lounge' space and then place a dining table extending up into the rest of the kitchen area. I'm just unsure as to whether it will work as a unified space.

Large chimney breast, how to finish living room?

Hi all, We are in the process of renovating a 1980's two storey house. I'm looking at the large living room at the moment, the chimney breast has been blocked and we plan to break it back out and add a stove. See pictures of the room as is below: Room Size: The chimney breast is very wide and quite shallow so I am not sure how best to finish it without the stove looking lost.... We will be putting down new white skirting and architraves. Going with dark walnut wood flooring. Some styles we've been looking at: Any thoughts what would work here?

Lovely big room. The tv looks too far from the seating, unless it’s the camera angle? I would bring your seating and tv in a bit to create a cosier area. I can’t see all the room so it is hard to place furniture without seeing it all. A floor plan will also help if you have one. Here’s a couple of pics which may help.

I agree with Sonia…. Move the sofas away from the wall….. put the wood sideboard on the opposite wall to the fireplace. Add a rug and curtains and pictures to introduce pattern. And perhaps fill the space with more stuff such as a tripod lamp or an oversized house plant. And personally I think the mirror over the fireplace is too small - something taller will trick your eye into imagining the space is taller

Thanks guys .. yes as Sarah L has suggested this is the lounge as it currently stands, we haven’t moved in yet. I’ve never not had a fire place/chimney without alcoves .. so I’m interested in dealing with the flat wall which the fireplace sits in…

Hi Helen J, congratulations on your new home! It is hard to tell from the photo but is the room a rectangle shape? It is a great idea to move the furniture away from the walls to create a cosier more balanced look. Having a rug can help zone the seating area, we always recommend going large on the rug and if possible with the front sofa legs to be on top.
