Large chimney breast, how to finish living room?

Hi all,

We are in the process of renovating a 1980's two storey house.

I'm looking at the large living room at the moment, the chimney breast has been blocked and we plan to break it back out and add a stove.

The chimney breast is very wide and quite shallow so I am not sure how best to finish it without the stove looking lost....

We will be putting down new white skirting and architraves. Going with dark walnut wood flooring.

That wall paper doesn't go at all.. and you don't need wallpapers.. how about a cream shade on the fireplace part of wall with oxblood coloured (from your curtain flowers) horizontal band below mantel, while the rest of the walls be lilac? Ever considered stoenwork similar to your fireplace on that wall? Also lower the hung photographs.. should be at least four inches below the windows' top edge.. Your sofas are quite dark. they seem aubergine.. is there any way you can at least place one of the sofas across from a window so that light falls on it? right now it is in the shadows backed against the windows, therefore more dark (does it seem so when you're in the room too?) The mirror (though nice) is too solid and thick for the mantel. can it go on a clearer stretch of some wall? fourth wall? What is the fourth wall like? idk how the fourth wall is like but how about angling large sofa at 90 degrees to the window with the single seater also angled in the corner where the lamp is.. and place the side table with lamp infront of the window (i-e at the corner of the 'L' made by t he sofas).. If possible get lighter lamp shades (cream).. Love the cushions.. place two of these cushions on the single seater to relieve the large sofa.. Please turn the rug lengthwise along the length of the sofa.. get a glass/metal table (if tots allow) or cream ottomon as center table.. The TV is too large for the rack, no? The vase is being wasted under the tv.. Florals and stripes can be mixed depending on print.. but if you bring anymore florals in this room, it would be best to match the flower shape to those in the curtains. I find the curtains too short...

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

I think as well as adding life to the room with a different wall colour, you need to add some textures. But you have a great base to work from - well chosen sofa, floor, fireplace, etc. Great! The colour I would suggest you use in this space is called Sedgemoor by a company called Francesca’s Paints. I know you can’t get them over there in Ireland, but I have posted a picture of a room painted in this shade - perhaps you can get Dulux to colour match if you like it? You could then add a few cushions in natural colours, like dark brown, and possibly something like this from John Lewis: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-luce-cushion/p519627?colour=Blackberry. I would also add some pattern/texture/interest into the scheme through cushions - I really love the idea of layering up a pile of these, like in the photo on the Heal’s website (also posted): http://www.heals.co.uk/content/ebiz/heals/invt/583041/583041_l1.jpg. Then another thing you could do is add a rug, I would probably go for a textured brown one like this tonal rug from Habitat http://www.habitat.co.uk/mohit-large-brown-tonal-rug-170-x-240cm/rugs//fcp-product/24124.
