Why is old painted wallpaper bubbling?

Just painted over some old painted wallpaper which has been on the walls for many years. I presume it's had a silk emulsion on as it had a sheen.
Used a good quality vinyl paint on it and now it's bubbling everywhere!
Spent hours prepping the whole wall and I'm horrified.
I've popped a few and put in some special glue to push them back down but only the really large ones. 🙄
Why would this happen does anyone know?
Is it now just a case of either popping and glueing all back down or re papering? 😭

Ps the chimney breast didn't bubble because it wasn't previously painted so I used an oil based coat on this first.

Didn't think I would need to on the side alcove walls - having previously been painted! Argh!

We've just had to use this for something similar - bubbling paint on a plastered wall, it's expensive but worked a treat.

This is going to almost have to be an eclectic mix...which can work. I would cover the glass doors with curtains or roll-up shades/blinds for sure, on the living room side. Could be sheer or gauze type material. Or even roman shades in a patterned fabric. I would then find a very large ornate mirror to go over the fireplace. You could either distress one yourself, or probably find one that is already distressed. To be quite honest, the wallpaper you have on the fireplace wall looks like it could work as is. Not exactly sure what the color is...(bad computer monitor). Get one or two overstuffed slipcovered chairs with skirts. Get some throw pillows that are in the same color range as those to use on leather couch. Maybe a thick floral rug and one of those industrial bin carts for a coffee table. Go antiquing and junk store shopping...find old flower vases or ornate silver pitchers and fill them with flowers.

How will you pose for your Miss Photogenic photo op? Will you go with the Carmen Miranda fruit bowl tiara? Or would the Easter egg thingamadooeys suffice? Decisions, decisions..... Maybe Grover could photo shop each one with your dress so we can decide? We wouldn't want to break any decorating rules because we do have our reputations to uphold. LOLOLOLOLOL

I agree with victoriabunglowranch, scrub it and repaint in one of the colours of the piece, I'd personally head towards dark and moody colours for walls, with crisp white ceilings, how about wrapping the chimney in smokey mirror in same shade that you paint the wall, I agree floor is very busy, would like to see a large rug here to keep the focus on the fireplace and I'd keep the "mantle area" free from objects, the fire place is enough, art work on side walls and floral pieces on coffee tables or buffets, I'd also choose luxe furniture and fabrics in one of the lighter shades shown in the fireplace, perhaps with a slight leaning towards art deco in some pieces and then spice up with accent cushions, art, lamps and lighting. Art Deco can carry contemporary pieces too, be brave here this could be a very special room with it's own personality and with care it will still link to the other areas of the house.

Thanks, is the light bouncing off it? I would go with the yellow as your accent in small doses. Bright yellow is obviously in fashion at the moment but could be expensive to replace when out of fashion so stick to cushions etc. you could do the walls in a light grey as it looks as if they could take it and choose navy or purple as your secondary colour (or turquoise/teal would work as above) for cushions, rug, accessories etc or even try a feature wallpaper. These are fairly classical colours so won't date. Try lamps etc in classical shapes (urns, ginger jars etc) so you can just change the shade when needed

Sorry I can't edit post, I meant to say that I was painting over old paint on a plastered wall, but it had had wallpaper on top of the old paint. I'd stripped the wall paper and sugar soaped it but the paint still bubbled.

Ah ok I see what you mean. Thank you. Should have probably used it before I painted but it's not something that has happened before.

I'm trying to paint over the actual wallpaper but it's bubbled in the middle and not just the edges 😱

It's a nightmare. Not just one place either or id hide it with a plant 🤣🌿

Have to see what it's like in daylight and might just have to strip it back and start again. Never had this before but then I rarely wallpaper so always paint onto plaster.

Will the bubbles go back down when it’s dry? I’d give it 24-48 hours

I think it stretches when it's wet and may well shrink back. Hopefully.

I also think it will shrink back when dry. Try to not touch it for a couple of days

I’ve painted wallpaper before because I just couldn’t be bothered to remove it first. It did bubble at first but it definitely shrank back and the bubbles disappeared after it had dried. Fingers crossed! 🤞
