Sliding door length, Solar Glass - yes or no?

Hi All - doing a refurb, extension. So many choices and so many opinions am getting headaches everyday !! have 2 dilemmas. We have a north west facing garden (so hotter in afternoon). We are looking to extend out the kitchen and have sliding doors. Originally we were going to have 9m x 4 m glass front sliding door extension. But we were concerned about the heat so decided to put a small wall in the corner at the suggestion of the architect.

When I discussed the design and the glass required with the sliding door company we chose I got the following response (yes am being serious) - 'It now looks s***' - which I have to say was upsetting and annoying at the same time.

So the dilemma: should I now go back to the original design? and suck it up with heat if it's there.

The glass chap also said we could use solar conditioning on the windows to reduce the heat. But I really don't know how affective this will be. And plus is he just looking for an even bigger pay day !!

Any advice welcome...

Really difficult one. I suppose if the Glass is low- e it will help contain the heat within the home and also increase the band of the property EPC. This is really handy if it's being rented out in the future as the minimum requirement will be Band C by 2025.

My sister’s new kitchen extension is nearly all sliding doors at the back and she said during this summer’s drought/heatwave it was unbearable at times. I’m not so sure what you mean by a wall, do you mean brick pillars either side with the sliding doors between them? This is hers.

About your plumber saying "plumb layout is confirmed". That is a load of rubbish. It's fairly easy to move drains around (yes he might have to rip up some walls, but he can also do off-the-wall installations to avoid that). In a small bath proper placement is of the utmost importance!!! If you have the bathtub and shower next to each other that will be much better and then the glass separator idea should work. padmaramachandran's (see post above) setup sounds more reasonable to me as well (see first picture below). This is similar to your setup but as you have more space you could put in bath tub and shower where the picture only shows a bath tub. Also if you do it that way you could theoretically have a bidet or a wider wash basin (small double perhaps too). Example layout: Do you need a bathtub in the guest bath? If not you have a lot more room to work with. E.g. for a double wash basin and large walking shower and a bidet (2nd picture). Example of off-the-wall installation for toilet and bidet and a large walking shower. Finally if you ignore this advice and do it the way you planned ;) then I suggest you really thing about that glass separator. Doing it right will make a lot of difference (see 3rd picture). Hello egreevy, Okay, yes I see, it's a difficulty but maybe not impossible... Just whether you want to try to find out more about this.. Taking windows out to paint is a bigger job but it may still be possible.. ... So for the immediate.. Paint the front door (just the door) it might give a nice finish to have the side windows white.. Then you have a bit of contrast like your image above.. and add window boxes with lovely foliage or buxus.. it will work with the green you already have... I couldn't see as my screen was dimmed.. I think leaving all the ivy colour you have at present would be really nice.. (hence my suggestion of more green!! Also I wouldn't paint the pebble dash, to me it looks absolutely fine on the house itself.. Maybe the small boundary wall at the front and a bit of the garage.. Also a flat box hedge coming over the top of the boundary wall could be nice too.. It will be lovely and green.. : ) )

Hi. I think the overall look is good. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open
