We have a similar situation and I think this looks great and would hate to put railing up in the view off our back patio that has stairs down to the lawn.
railings are typically required when you have 3 or more risers, our railing was installed on the right side of the stairs going down (on the upper deck wall ) after this picture was taken (this was a long time ago) and doesn't impede any view. Railings only need to be on one side of stairs. People will take the railings off sometimes once they are signed off by the inspector and Elvis leaves the building.
