Runner or carpet for these stairs??

This central freestanding staircase is being painted white with dark handrail. I'm planning to do wall to wall tartan (plaid) carpet ( manufacturer's picture attached). I'd like advice if this would look ok. My husband is not keen on a runner as he thinks the sides collect more dust. The carpet is very expensive so I don't want to make a mistake.

Are you planning on putting the plaid on the stairway and floor? It's an interesting look, but might be difficult to decorate around. As for the stairs, dust will gather whether there's carpet there or not. I like the look of runner.

Hatetoshop, I am carpeting the upstairs landing but leaving the oak floor at ground level with maybe a floor runner. What do you mean that it could be difficult to decorate around?

Thanks all very much for your comments. I just looked at your link carolins for striped carpets, they are all fab but are ALL vertical. Has anyone ever seen horizontal ones? It would be a very expensive mistake to make if it didn't work out, especially here in Ireland as all home decor items are overpriced. Need to paint the dark stairwell too, no bannisters, just wall. Would love to be adventurous with colour but always seem to stick with the 'safe' neutral options.

Yes. But that said it depends on the flooring in the rest of the house the style of staircase and also the style of runner . I don’t like runners on stairs but that is me.

How to transition from carpet stairs to wood landing?

Since I posted this, I think we came with a plan! We thought that bringing the carpet up to the landing would not work. Why? Mainly safety. When you are walking up and there is a little bit of carpet you are standing on, it could have a little give on it, but also for walking down too. Then the bridge piece wold be in an unexpected place and people would more than likely trip! I found some "nosing" in some sites online and some looked nice, but were chunky. We said no, to those as you do not want something chunky sticking out at the top of the stairs! We are going to get a silver/chrome metal nosing to finish it off, which will be neater and we have chrome hardware on the doors throughout the house now. the carpet just was laid, unfortunately the fitter did not have the nosing we wanted, but its on the way. I will post a pic when it is done so you can see. Here is it, unfinished, at the moment, but so far no tripping!

If you had wall-to-wall carpeting in your hall, dining and living room, for example. Just on the stairs wouldn't pose a problem.

OK I see what you mean. Most of the house is wall to wall except for the hall and another dining area. To be honest, I've never found a picture of wall to wall on an open staircase like this without an actual wall so I'll follow your day and go with a runner. Thanks

When I though you meant the carpet was for ground floor I would say no to runner, and leave stairs dark with white risers...but since the carpet is only upstairs on landing I think a runner would be nice visually and since it's expensive you would like to appreciate it / show it more. Wood stairs are just dusty no matter what, I've never had runners but all wood stairs and they are just dusty... i don't know that it will be less work, prob same amount of cleaning. Love the carpet, beautiful.
