Under stairs bar dilemma

Hello,

I have created a bar in a cupboard under the stairs and I need advice on the glasses rack. The space is quite small and has the slanted ceiling going through it. I was planning to attach the glass racks on the back wall starting towards the top right and have them step down to the left. And possibly a couple of small shelves on the right hand wall for the cocktail set and garnish bottles (picture with design attached)

The other option is to just add shelves, but I think I can t fit more glasses with the racks.

I would love to hear any suggestions - about the design and also if you know where I can get good quality parts for the rack. Have you done something similar? I would love to see how you created yours.

I am happy to get creative (with my limited DIY skills) - I know there must be a solution somewhere!

Do you store any wine in there? or just spirits? If you do have wine you could create a wine rack at the top to fill the space with the glasses rack underneath. Or you could use the space for the cocktail set with some snazzy lighting. RGB LED strips would look fantastic in there with some plush furniture board/melamine/vinyl to add a bit of glam.

Idealy you want to keep a bar top clear where the bottles are standing (to look welcoming if nothing else), so maybe some shelving to hold the bottles? You could get some cheap DVD racks and fill the back wall with them, then each bottle can have its own space to live, and as they should have adjustable shelves each 'pocket' could be the exact size for that bottle, so it make a cabinet of curiosity appearance?

I think If you can get the glasses to hang down would be best,

I like your idea for the glasses, I could use the space above it for more glasses or wine bottles. I do have a wine bottle rack in the kitchen but no space to add glasses near it.

I have a bar top that i can pull down when I want to make drinks...I had a builder create small tiered steps for the spirits (but he had no idea how to add the glasses

I would still do an island. You have the space. I hate having my stove against the wall. You get boxed in and forget about two people working at once. How about stove in island, fridge all the way down to the right? You don't want the fridge to interrupt work space. You will end up w two too-small spaces instead of one nice functional one. We had an island with a downdraft Jenn-air stove-worked quite well for most needs.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

I’d also go for the idea of one more shelf above so you can use the top triangle to display some of the smaller items, and with the glassware hanging under. Love this bar, excellent work!

A couple of questions. What is below the shelf of many bottles😉? Is that also for bar storage? And is the space the full depth of your stairs? You dont want to create shelves so deep stuff gets buried at the back but also maximise storage and accessibility to glasses. Big balloon glasses can take up a good bit of space.

Just some suggestions as I think you are on the right track with your layout. Would you consider putting a mirror behind the bottle shelf? And some led lighting and some darkers colours. https://pin.it/7kzVCPC this might provide some inspiration for your shelves as I think the space will allow for nice long shelves to the right, you can then position your glass racks down the slope as you suggest. Those ones you linked are cast iron so should be fine, and I think getting individual ones like that will allow you use the space best, ie give space for your balloons. Post a pic when you're done!

@mckenna_deirdre Below the spirits shelf are 2 shelves for the kitchen pantry - extra spices, etc. I am planning on having these covered possibly by a nice fabric that can be draped down and to the front so none of the pantry stock is visible when I'm using the bar - it should also add an element of colour and soft furnishing for the bar.

Yes, this is the full depth of stairs. You're right, I don't want a shelf that is too deep as it would be tedious having to get something from the back, plus it would start feeling cluttered.

I am definitely decorating the space to feel a bit lush and luxurious. I'm planning to use some sticky back wallpaper - it is available in some really gorgeous colours and patterns. Something that keeps catching my eye is this colour theme: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/576390452321038507/

Hello,

Here's an update on the bar...

I'm really happy with the shelving and glass racks I found on Amazon. The shelves fit all of my large funky glasses.

Now I just have to decorate it - will share the completed look soon hopefully.
