1909 Kitchen advice

Hi. We’ve recently had a 1909 kitchen installed unpainted. It’s being painted now and I have a concern. The outer frame is timber (so grained) but the middle panel is a mdf (I think) with a smooth white covering. The spray painters are outside doing their job right now, but they’ve said the grain will still be faintly visible. But this will be different to the middle panel, which to me will just look weird. Anyone else had this? Trying not to panic x

I think the manufacturer has sent you the wrong frame as it should be smooth

Thanks Jonathan. What else can go wrong! Just been told a mark on the quartz worktop cannot be removed so that might need to be replaced. I’ll investigate. Thank you

A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

Hi there, my husband and I are embarking on a self-build and we're in the early stages - have sketches but not formal drawings from our architect. This is going to be a small starting point because we have a small budget, with plans for extension in the 5-10 year range. The site is in a rural part of Wicklow, so there's no traffic as such (I have seen this as a consideration in other posts :). The question I have is around the size of the kitchen, which you can see in the photo below. The house is on a two-level site, so the main entrance will be through a lower level, under the living area, and up through the stairs in the bottom right corner (marked Down). The kitchen is only 2x4m and I'm not even sure it really qualifies as "galley". I am looking for some guidance as to the placement of our appliances. We'd really like to have big fridge/freezer (XX in the drawing) and dishwasher (not currently in the drawing) in there (in addition to your standard hob/oven/sink). There is a dotted line for counter or island against the wall with the stove, but we think we probably won't have space for that in the current dimensions. There is an option to extend the entire house by 0.5-1m out towards the deck (make it "longer" but keep it the same width), and we'd likely give all of those gains to the kitchen - kind of stretch the inside of the house. However, this would really strain the budget and we may not be able to swing it. Do you think we can make do with the kitchen at the current size and have all those appliances? How would you suggest we lay them out? Thanks so much for you advice! Seems like the people on this site really have a wealth of knowledge :).

paint damage around kitchen knobs - protective shield advice?

Hi all! We repainted our kitchen Cabinets a couple of years ago. The two most common use cabinet doors have paint damage around the knobs revealing the previous colours. We repainted but within a few weeks we were back to the same issue. If we repainted again is there a clear protective shield (vinyl for example) that we can stick around the knob to protect it? Or do you have other suggestions? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Love some advice for our open living/kitchen/office space.

Hello I would love to hear some advice on redecorating our open living/kitchen/office. When I first painted it we were going for that clean modern look of gray/white/yellow. Its been years like this and now with us working from home the room has a cold, office like energy to it. It's amazing how you can live in a space and not really see it for what it is. Looking at these pictures I'm ashamed to think this has been our living conditions for so long. Its been well over a year since we removed the fireplace I still have not gotten around to painting that bit of skirting board. The ability to make tangible improvements to my everyday reality has been right there at my fingertips and I failed to notice. ''High is the way but all eyes are upon the ground'' The large wall hanging was our latest attempt to add some colour. My girlfriend is drawn to those earthy colours or boho look. I'd like to make it a cosier/warmer space. With the great recommendations I've seen in other threads here I'm excited to see what advice you have.

This is unpainted. Can’t show painted as we’ve moved out for the weekend to mum in laws!

The reason MDF is used in the middle is because it adds stability. If our company make them we use Tulip wood for the frame because it paints well and easily and then MDF in the middle. We wouldn’t combine a grained timber and a smooth board.

Maybe speak to your kitchen designer and discuss what you've purchased. Different timbers have different grains when painted and if you've purchased a 'smooth' shaker door then as Daisy said an outer frame of tulip wood will give you a smooth finish when painted and a mdf panel would match and be more stable. But if you purchased a wood grained door like oak or ash then this will have a grained finish when painted and normally you'd have an oak or ash veneered centre panel to match (unless its a 'design feature' having a smooth centre and your kitchen designer would/should of gone through this).
