We’re having an extension and are unsure of layout of reconfigured space. Do you think the extension (with roof lantern and doors onto the garden) should be home to the living area, kitchen or dining area? For info, the extension is quite small at 4.5 x 4.5 so only really big enough for one dedicated space. Tia
I think you need to decide on your layout, which rooms go where. And once that's decided then see where you'd need extra light and that's where the roof lights/ lantern goes.
Oris the lantern purely decorative which is why you are not bothered about where it's going?
Hi Ellie, I agree and that's where we're stuck as we can't make up our mind which would be the best layout :( Although somewhat decorative, the lantern will also provide light into a space which would otherwise be too dark without it I think?
First of all, there's no "wrong" answer to this, but I would advise against separating your kitchen and dining room - you want to easily transport plates between those two functions. In terms of what will work for you, perhaps go back to why you decided to build this extension in the first place. For me I'd want the kitchen in the extension because I love to cook and so I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but that's not necessarily correct for you. Some people love the idea of eating by the garden, or if you're someone who spends a lot of time relaxing on the sofa in the daytime, you might want your living space to look out onto it. It also probably depends a bit on the aspect - we don't know which way is north/south, but if the garden is south facing that means the other end of the room will be quite dark, so if you tend to use your living area in the evening that might be the place for it - where you can create a cosy, snug area with soft lighting. So I'd go back to basics and think about what problem you were trying to solve when you came up with the idea of building the extension in the first place, and how did you initially picture yourselves living in the space?
Thanks so much @hedgehog99, your comments are really helpful. Our initial thoughts were the kitchen in the extension for many of the reasons you describe. Your comments about the living area in the cosier and darker area have been really helpful too and have been helpful in reminding us what we wanted and why. Thank you! 😊
