Dining Nook Ideas
Hello!
We have opened our 1960s detached property dining room and kitchen up to create one big space, having only 1 toilet we managed to squeeze in a downstairs loo, due to building warrant conditions this has left us with a with a smaller than I would have like dining nook 136cm wide, I am really struggling what to do with the space now? I have attached some ideas I have had along with the actual space (ignore glass table) and layout plan. Any ideas or suggestions or experience fillling a similar space greatfully received!

Comments (25)Take out sofa, use beanbags and those blow up seats for their friends. Coloured rugs for tumbling and crawling on. Supersoft teddy bear blankets so they can curl up. Add in one of those soft blanket boxes for toy storage and so you have somewhere soft to perch when you are with them. Paper half way up the wall in the wall paper that kids can draw on, so they can decorate in whatever colour they like and you won't mind. A childs lift up desk, bookcase and some crazy lamps in weird colours. Then close the door, collapse on the sofa that you have moved, breathe a sigh of relief and thank your lucky stars that you have another room for the kids to go to. Comments (4)Kitchen is actually not a bad size, considering that you have the dining room and that it is the size of some modern kitchen diners. I think some of your cabinets are retro in a good way, maybe not the three quarter height one but the uppers and sliders under the sink are interesting. Could you see them in 50s retro mint green with olive walls or say duck egg blue units and walls and hints of pink or red here and there in the kitchen? You could have them resurfaced by an auto paint company in any colour you like. Comments (1)Hi, what a lovely "canvas" to begin! My late husband loved wood. I think it is too drab and have changed mine for glass and various off whites as the rooms are non-square here and the house is old but takes modern too. My gut feeling is that the way forward is to choose an exciting "theme" for downstairs first. Would you consider bright and airy sky, or tropical, or geometric, or bookish, or carnival, or countryside, what about a space rocket on the wall for the kids - it can be covered when they grow tired of it? And as it is it has my pet hate - a good window - wasted - with a grim reminder of housework - a sink in front of it instead of one out of sight with a strip light over it!!!!...See More

I think that the design of the kitchen can be improved to create more space but since everything is already built I will try and make some comments on the existing. Hopefully this can help you decide.
The resulting space is not sufficient for a proper table with chairs/bench to fit that area.Putting near the window a cupboard in a similar finish as the kitchen (I see a beautiful dark green) or a dark color will give an accent to that wall and will give more space for storage. There you can add some plants too. Please refer to the images attached.
The table I would suggest is a round one as the images attached with chairs. The position of the table would be in front of the closed door/window. It will need to be positioned to allow sufficient space for all of you to use it. This is an idea based on the drawings you provided not on a real survey.
