Paint Hallways Home Decorating

now need a colour scheme for hall and stairs

I’ve had to accept the colour of the parquet flooring is much deeper than the oak doors we have fitted. (Sanded floor and refinished so nice and polished look)

Can I bring it all together with just paint? The stair carpet is a vibrant red. The radiator cover is grey with oak top. Three rooms lead from the hall. A small sitting room / music room is magnolia . Our lounge is a silver grey with a feature wall. The kitchen has cream units and dark blue grey walls. Not sure if this helps as My colour schemes don’t really flow.
The hall is dark and we have tried to increase natural light. We have installed lots of ceiling lights and at night I tend to use lamps and lights on twigs in an old urn.
I’d really like the entrance to be beautiful. Our muddy dogs would just like to lay in it. Any ideas please?

Thats a lovely hall. The bit I’m not keen on is the lime green lower wall. If you painted it all in a gentle taupe like F&B Skimming Stone or Purbeck Stone, or any soft neutral it will make a huge difference. Pigeon is a lovely shade for a hall and it goes nicely with red. There will be less of a clash with the red carpet. I have a different colour in each room and there are no decor police saying it must all flow together. As long as you love it, that’s all that matters.

Thanks Sonia. The lime green was paint under the wallpaper we have just striped off. Whilst I don’t like the colour in the hall ,it has actually lightened the hall as it was all magnolia before. I like the last photo you have added. With the dado rail we have in place I fancy 2 shades but don’t want to make it too busy.

removing the door to kitchen would be easiest & cheapest way to open up & brighten the hall area. Next best, but more costly would be replacing door with one with glass panels. Look for used one in 2nd hand or @ your local Habitat for Humanity store. Keep the one you take off just in case other one gets damaged and needs to be replaced. Replacing only two panels would not achieve much I don't think. A mirror should only be placed where it can reflect something of interest & expand the room. If I recall, the staircase is what would be reflected? A photo collage frame? I think more colour is called for here. Your home, your choice. Bottom line is you decide what is right for your space. As you have likely noticed everyone has a different opinion, professional or not. Most important in re-styling a space is what the home owner wants to use the space for & to be their taste.

Maybe if you stuck to one colour scheme such as white and purple or grey and lime green, colours that compliment each other. You could have a cabinet on the larger side with some family photos or a mirror above it and maybe a single colour on the top half of the wall and a complimentary wallpaper on the bottom half. You could go for wood on the floor or a simple soft carpet but it might get muddy. You could also have a bench with storage underneath for shoes and bags, but try get a colour that matched the walls. You could also paint the banisters if they don't match the rest of the room.

Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Not knowing much about the rest of your home or your personal style, I might suggest you paint a soft color like Sherwin WIlliams Sea Salt.

Deluxe Engaged Locket on all walls is an idea. Keep lines simple, maybe? A simple black framed mirror, thin frame, on your wall. Then simple chrome fitrings

I can’t find any paint called deluxe engaged locket, who is it made by?I‘ve tried dulux too. We have chrome fittings and a chrome squiggle mirror that I quite like. Thanks

The photos on the dulux site make the colour look magnolia which is what we are just changing. I’d really like to use 2 shades of a colour.

Ah spellchecker....sorry! DULUX ENGRAVED LOCKET. works well throughout the house Nd depending on the light slightly changes hue. So it's mellow and tranquil but has a bit of a change in it. Works great with black amd chrome. I hope you find your colour. There's a before pic , before any decor but gives you an idea....
