I like the colour you already have, but if your going with anthracite grey then I’ve noticed people seem to go with the same colour for the frame.

I would prefer to see a colour too, rather than anthracite - which can turn into a bit of a black hole for a front door. I like a front door to be more interesting than just matching the window frames. Agree that doing the whole thing would be best to maximise the size of the door - especially since it's not huge and it's not centred on the front of the house - so you want it to be really obvious where the door is and draw people to it.

You make a good point Colourwise about 'drawing people in'. I'm not great at colour decisions so tend to stick to safe solutions. I'm committed to a grey door (for now anyway), so will stick with the same colour surround as Sonia suggested. I will definitely consider changing it if I find it too dark though.

No problem - choosing paint colours and explaining why they work is what I do! I tend to not get too involved in colour choices on here though as choosing colours online can be quite tricky and more involved than a quick answer on Houzz can provide.

Agree with other posters. I think the same colour can look quite “matchy” and can date more easily. I also like your current colour, but a bold colour could also look amazing - a yellow or blue. Seeing if I can link to one of my favourite Houzz pictures

Wow-I absolutely love the pink but am not that brave yet.at least it’s only a front door and as it’s not composite I can change the colour when the mood takes me ( and when I can justify changing it 🤣).

We took the plunge and went with bright red (we have a brick house with wooden windows) but other colours which might work are a light blue, a brighter blue or a yellow ?

So….five years down the line and its time to change my front door colour! I found me previous thread, and as @CWD pointed out in their post, keeping it grey could make it look more of a black hole.And when i look at it in its current state i couldnt agree more!

The inside of the front door & inside porch panelling will be De Nimes blue, and not sure whether the colour i choose should tone with that, or whether i should go a random colour?

Here are pics of it currently (only the planting has changed really) and i wondered about trying a lilac or a rich purple for a change. Although I’m painting the garage door ,i’m thinking of keeping it a grey (although will try to match the door more with the frame) as it is a lot further up the drive so you dont really see the two together.

Ha, I love that we're getting another go at this! What other colours have you got going on inside? I'd pull an accent colour from inside the house for the front door - de nimes is a lovely colour and that would be an easy option to continue from the hall to the exterior, but I also think it'd be a bit dull and something brighter and more colourful would be more cheerful. For example, the colour of the darkest flower in your pot at the front door - or the purple of the plant just round the corner there? I think you need a colour of that sort of depth (rather than a wishy washy pastel or anything too dark and muted - sorry but I don't like the olive green shown above). Other options would be a eggyolk yellow or a cobalt blue perhaps?

Hello again! Yes Denimes in porch ( along with a “wishy washy” shaded white 🤣) I agree I want a stronger colour. I am unable to do this fancy stuff like Sarah L did (how do you all do this? ) but have interestingly been drawn to colours like Sanderson Meadow violet and a lovely Crown colour called Plum Cistard.

Whoops - posted before I’d finished! Plum custard is Dulux not Crown …i’ve added pics of the Sanderson lilac along with F&B Rangwali which I put together while playing around in Brewers. I even thought about maybe doing the door surround a different colour to the door but scared I’ll make a bad decision.

Afraid I don’t love the green, and don’t fancy cobalt. Possibly egg yolk yellow might work. I’d love to see mock ups if anyone could do them ?

I prefer pic 2, but can understand why AI sees it as more balance, as the black bit matches the trim around the foundation of the house (but that doesn't mean AI is right). You could leave that top bit to the last to paint and if you like it in the anthracite leave it - but if you find you don't like it, you can paint it quite easily. I think it'll look like you forgot to paint that bit though - and having it all one colour gives it more presence, it looks intentional and it really shows that this is the entrance to the house. The AI image is a slightly different colour to the ones you chose and you should probably sample 2-3 colours before choosing. Needs to be a colour with a lot of depth, not too clean.

Thanks for all your ideas. I’m going to wait until hall, stairs and landing are done before I make the front door decision as too many decisions inside ( carpet, lighting etc ) to make right now and I’m overwhelmed. I’ve made the decision to paint the inside of the front door India yellow, as the porch felt too dark all in De Nomes. THis might change my thoughts on th4 front door colour…I’ll be in touch again soon 😉
