I need help with an issue with a chimney breast thats had a gas fire.

Today I've started stripping off the wallpaper from my living room in my new property. I've managed to get past the chimney breast, but I've hit a snag regarding the chimney breast as there used to be a gas fire installed and the right side of it is battened and boarded up, with the bottom part of it still loose as it contains the old gas lever for what was the gas fire. The boarding starts off straight and then becomes uneven leaving a 1/8 inch gap between the baton and the lower end. Does anyone have any idea of how to rectify this issue as I'm painting the living room in two separate colours with the chimney breast as a feature wall.

I think as well as adding life to the room with a different wall colour, you need to add some textures. But you have a great base to work from - well chosen sofa, floor, fireplace, etc. Great! The colour I would suggest you use in this space is called Sedgemoor by a company called Francesca’s Paints. I know you can’t get them over there in Ireland, but I have posted a picture of a room painted in this shade - perhaps you can get Dulux to colour match if you like it? You could then add a few cushions in natural colours, like dark brown, and possibly something like this from John Lewis: http://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-luce-cushion/p519627?colour=Blackberry. I would also add some pattern/texture/interest into the scheme through cushions - I really love the idea of layering up a pile of these, like in the photo on the Heal’s website (also posted): http://www.heals.co.uk/content/ebiz/heals/invt/583041/583041_l1.jpg. Hi Emmeline. Have measured as best I could. The room is 9ft wide and 18ft long going right up to the bay window sill.Imagine you are standing in the doorway. The door opens inwards and to the left. The space between the open door frame and the wall perpendicular i.e. facing the bay window is approx 2ft. On that perpendicular wall are cubes for art work, a tv and a flat chrome edged gas fire. The fire is 1ft of the ground.. The cube unit is 2ft off the ground as is the tv. So not much space to play around with there. Still standing in the doorway on the wall to your right is a longish radiator. At a slight diaganonal opposite you is a window. Height from floor is 2ft6in. Length of window is 3ft Distance ofrom fire place wall to window is 8ft4in. . Distance from end of window to alcove wall of bay window is 3ft2in. There are two small alcove wall each 2ft6in in length. The bay window is a square shape rather than curved. The length is 4ft. Depth 3ft. Height 2ft.6in.from floor. We moved house recently so the furniture does not really fit the space. I would like to keep the sofa if possible. It is a standard shape with rounded arms and very comfortable. It is a 2 and 1/2 seater approx 5ft 8in long and 3ft high. In an ideal world I'd like 1920s 30s or mid century scandanavian. But would also like to keep the sofa. The only thing I can think of doing is put the sofa facing the fire and take it from there. What about a window seat which would also provide storage? If the sofa faces the fire what do I do with the rest of the room? Chair angled at small window... ottoman??? As for colours the room is painted chalk white. When you come in the front door ( 1930s with coloured glass) there is a curved polished plaster wall in burnt umber. So am thinking moss green, mustard i.e autumn colours a la Orla Kiely??? I'm pretty sure they will have been put in to provide a non-combustable zone behind and around the stove. We are about to install a wood burning stove and the installation instructions specify an area that needs to be heat resistant. Removing or even painting them behind the stove would be difficult and potentially dangerous. I would either paint the rest of the chimney breast a dark green to reduce the impact of the tiles, or add a fire surround (checking with the manufacturer or a reputable installer about clearance) and some painted tongue and groove cladding over the chimney breast depending on your preferred style.

Hello Mary, Yes some good advice here about moving the sofa from the front of the window.. What you want really is to create some symmetry between rooms whilst allowing them some individuality.. That comes with differing height furnishings such as the two cabinets and the tables.. Definitely paint the cabinets- that way they blend in to the alcove and appear less solid allowing the room to breathe. If you were to paint the chimney breast a different colour this will give the two fireplaces greater impact! Something to accent the purple curtains and cushions I'd suggest a darker shade of grey or Purple but not entirely sure what colour the sofa's are... Black, Brown, Aubergine?? ..You have a double room so show it off! I would not take away that wooden armchair... It is slightly more subtle and is good to have- again can't tell what colour the fabric is...Green, Grey?? So consider that if the painting sounds like a nice idea to you.. I would also like to suggest getting another mirror for the front fireplace similar or the same as you have in the rear of the room. Mirrors add something and bounce light... It also gives a sense of symmetry with the two fireplaces... Re- arrange the existing pictures.. One really good way to tone down the size and density of those sofas and armchair is to have some nicely chosen throws and cushions and - even simply folded down the back and place the big leather armchair at an angle in the far end part of the room... I would place the sofas so they face each of the fireplaces in both rooms as you have two of each! Turn the coffee table round too, so it aligns with the sofa. Simple lines are needed whilst keeping the windows and french doors as free as possible. The single armchair with the wooden arm rests could sit in front of one of the alcoves...With the book shelving behind, so you can sit and read in the cosy armchair next to the fire... : ))
